February 14...  Valentine's Day to you, Woody's birthday to me. Five national titles and 13 B1G championships over 28 seasons at Ohio State. The Buckeyes own the highest winning percentage in college football history (.730), and the second most all-time wins (929), thanks in large part to Woody Hayes. There's always debate around here as to whether Meyer, Tressel, or Hayes is the face of Ohio State football, and to me it's an absurd exercise. Wayne Woodrow Hayes is THE greatest coach OSU has ever had no matter how you slice the pie; the five national titles, 13 conference championships, and 205 wins are more than enough to earn the designation, but that he was able to grind for nearly three decades while being despised, not only by the national media but by some academics on his own campus, is what makes Hayes untouchable. Tressel was a *ichigan slayer and Meyer was a recruiting machine, but neither man, specifically Urban Meyer, had Hayes' ability to grind away, season after season, sometimes running on pure spite. While Meyer burns bright -- possibly brighter than anyone ever -- for a handful of years at whatever job he's destined to soon quit, he's unable to deal with the stress and pressure, which are built-in elements at programs like Ohio State. Hayes, on the other hand, used that pressure as fuel to prove his haters wrong. If you want to debate X'ing and O'ing ability, recruiting capability, or which era was tougher, that's fine, argue away, but there is no debate -- ZERO -- when it comes to mental toughness, inner courage, and the ability to grind like a beast. Happy birthday, Woody Hayes, you are forever THE face of Ohio State football.
