Fulton makes the argument that Coombs, with Mattison, are basically running the same defense with the same tendencies as last year. There are a few nuanced changes, but what’s causing them issues is the same thing that caused Hafley issues against Clemson (with inferior talent on the back end exposing it against lesser competition this year).

I think folks need to change the narrative and recognize that Hafley ran a vanilla defensive scheme with historic talent. Lots is folks watching OSU last year said this. After the 2018 mess it was great to simplify and let the talent do the work. But the idea that Hafley was some defensive genius and that Coombs has screwed it up simply isn’t true. 

The key is now - can Coombs and company make schematic changes that protect the inexperienced backend, and develop these guys for the future?
