I managed to catch the 2014 OSU-Sparty game on Big Ten Network this morning. It definitely felt a bit nostalgic, but did work to help replace the lack of Buckeye football this weekend. Anyways, a few things definitely stood out, much of which we already know but I know I personally kinda forgot about.

  • I forgot just how good Michael Bennett was. He was making plays all night, and was a huge disruption for the Spartan offense. With Joey Bosa seeing a lot of double teams, Bennett took advantage.
  • The way Zeke made an impact as a blocker. Whether it was blitz pickups, or lead blocking for JT, he leveled defenders. He had a good night with the ball in his hands too.
  • JT wasn’t perfect, but he made numerous big time, perfect throws. Twice in the second quarter he threw a ball perfectly placed to Devin Smith 30 yards down field. Once an over the shoulder throw on a go route where they had great coverage. There were plenty of other ones too. We all know this, but it’s painfully obvious something happened. Whether it was the ankle, or the 2015 disaster, or the QB coach, games like this made it clear that JT was well on his way to an eventual Heisman if things went right.
  • Ward struggled, and it really showcased how much Coombs developed him in 3 years.
  • Again, we all know it, but can’t understate how nasty that Oline was. Massive holes and a clean pocket all night.
  • The number of weapons on this team... I mean we could hurt a defense from everywhere. Zeke’s running, Devin Smith’s deep threat, Jalen Marshal and Dontre Wilson’s versatility, Michael Thomas’ ability to get open, JT’s dual threat ability. Easy to see why great defenses like MSU and Bama couldn’t stop this offense once they figured it out.

I definitely recommend catching a game or two if you’re missing the Buckeyes this fall (of course you are). It doesn’t replace watching the 2020 National Title run, but it certainly helps.
