“The conferences, whoever decides to play, can get together and do what they need to do,” CFP executive director Bill Hancock told Lee Shirvanian and me on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5 on Monday. “Right now, we’re hoping for a CFP. We’re certainly planning for a championship game in Miami.

“There are still a lot of hypotheticals. I don’t find in productive to get in those.”

Here’s what we do know:

The committee plans to meet in person
The final rankings, as of Monday, Aug. 17, will be issued Sunday, Dec. 20, 10 days before the semifinals are schedule to be played.
Fan attendance for the CFP will be determined by the local authorities.

“We just don’t know what the season will bring,” Hancock said. “None of us do, but the committee will be ready. They’ll use their protocol and expertise of the members to rank the teams.”

Obviously, Hancock has no say as to which teams or conferences will play this fall. While his committee - as of Monday - has fewer games to evaluate, he - like others - wishes that wasn’t the case.

“The heartbreak of the virus - the pandemic - is almost incalculable,” he said. “It feels like it affects everyone in the world. The heartbreak of the athletes not able to compete is palpable. I feel so bad for those young people, and I feel bad for the people has to make decisions about the season.”

Could the CFP be pushed later into the 2021 calendar?

“We will be flexible,” he said. “We’re awaiting word from our management committee. They key word will be flexibility.”

Maybe the B1G still has time to change their mind.
