Justin Fields Makes Maxwell Award Watch List

As you might expect, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which – like the Heisman Trophy – honors college football's best player.

Fields, who was also named to the watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award, is one of 90 players on the preseason watch list released by the Maxwell Football Club on Friday.

Fields is expected to be a frontrunner for both of those awards, along with Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Among last year's 20 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, Fields is one of just six who is still playing college football, along with Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer, Clemson running back Travis Etienne, Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard, SMU quarterback Shane Buechele and Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

Friday's announcement of the Maxwell Award watch list concludes the NCFAA's two-week rollout of preseason watch lists. The full list of Buckeyes who were named to watch lists over the past two weeks:

  • QB Justin Fields: Davey O'Brien Award, Maxwell Award
  • RB Master Teague: Wuerffel Trophy
  • WR Chris Olave: Biletnikoff Award
  • TE Luke Farrell: John Mackey Award
  • OL Wyatt Davis, Thayer Munford and Josh Myers: Outland Trophy
  • LB Baron Browning, Tuf Borland and Pete Werner: Butkus Award
  • CB Shaun Wade: Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Jim Thorpe Award
  • K Blake Haubeil: Lou Groza Award
  • P Drue Chrisman: Ray Guy Award
