THE PERTINENT INFO

When: Saturday, November 23, 2019
Where: Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio
TV: Noon // FOX
Announcers: Gus Johnson, Joel Klatt and Jenny Taft

This will be the 35th time Ohio State and Penn State have faced each other in football. The Buckeyes hold a 20–14* advantage in the all-time series and are 12–7 when playing the kitty cats in Columbus. However, since PsU joined the Big Ten in 1993, the Buckeyes are 11–2 when facing them in Ohio Stadium.

Jimmy Franklin's team escaped with a 34-27 victory over mighty Indiana last week.

Below, you will find some interesting facts about the teams, key offensive player stats, coach information, and team stats.

*NCAA sanctions be damned.

Ohio State

THE LAST TIME...

  • Ohio State played Penn State, the Buckeyes pulled out a 27-26 victory in Beaver Stadium.
  • This game was played in Columbus, the Scarlet and Gray came from behind to win 39-38 in 2017.
  • The Buckeyes played on November 23rd was 2013. The team defeated Indiana 42-14 in Columbus.
  • The Scarlet and Gray lost the 11th game of the season, when it was played on Nov. 23rd, was 1996. Think Tai Streets and a banana peel making Shawn Springs slip.
  • A Buckeye rushed for over 300 yards in a game was 1995. Eddie George went for 314 yards against Illinois on the cold afternoon of November 11th.

ON THE HORIZON

  • If the Buckeyes can beat Penn State by 24+ points, they will become the second* Big Ten team to win 11 consecutive games by that margin. Michigan did it between 1903-04.
  • J.K. Dobbins (3,745) is 24 yards away from passing Eddie George (3,768) for third on Ohio State's all-time career rushing list.
  • If Ohio State defeats Penn State by more than 20 points, the Buckeyes will become the first team in Big Ten history to start the season with 11 wins of 20 or more points.
  • Chase Young (13.5) needs 0.5 a sack to tie Vernon Gholston's single season record of 14.0 sacks for a season.
  • K.J. Hill is currently second on Ohio State's all-time receptions list. He needs 9 catches to tie David Boston (191) for first.

*Yes, Nebraska also had an 11 game 24+ winning streak, but the team was not in the Big Ten during the 1971 season.

LET'S GO STREAKING

  • Ohio State has won 15 consecutive games.
  • The Buckeyes have scored at least 34 points in all 12 games with Ryan Day as head coach.
  • Ohio State has 12 consecutive wins against ranked teams.
  • The scarlet and gray have won six straight against teams ranked in the AP top-10.
  • K'Vaughan Pope has had interceptions in consecutive games.
  • The Silver Bullets have held 10 consecutive opponents to under 300 yards of total offense (a program first).

 Penn State University

GET TO KNOW PENN STATE

  • Penn State University is located in University Park, PA.
  • The university was established in 1855 as Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania.
  • The Nittany Lions are 9–1 this season.
  • Since joining the Big Ten, Penn State is 139–79 (.638) against conference opponents.

  • The first recorded game in PSU history was played on November 12, 1881. Penn State went to Bucknell and won 9-0..
  • Notable alumni are: John Aniston (dude who blessed the world by creating Jennifer), Keegan-Michael Key (Jimmy Franklin look-alike and the less talented half of Key and Peele), Jonathan Frakes (Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation), Lisa Salters (ESPN), Lara Spencer (co-anchor of Good Morning America), Tom Verducci (Sports Illustrated), Andrew Kevin Walker (wrote the movie Seven), Rake Yohn (Viva La Bam and Jackass), LaVar Arrington (linebacker), Todd Bleckledge (QB and ESPN), Courtney Brown (DE, No. 1 overall pick), Calvin Booth (NBA), Ki-Jana Carter (No. 1 overall pick)

I'm sure there are people left off this list, but I ended the search early because this school bores me .

  • 12–0 (1.00) overall

Day's hometown is Manchester, NH. He attended Manchester High School and attended college at New Hampshire. Day has been in coaching for 18 years and is Ohio State's 25th head coach.

After this season's first eight games, Ryan Day and the Buckeyes are outscoring their opponents 386-63. That is an average victory of 48-8. The numbers stay fairly steady when you add in the three games Day coached last season.

After 12 games with Day as head coach, Ohio State is beating teams by an average score of 52-12. The only teams not to lose to Day by more than 40 points are Oregon State, TCU, Florida Atlantic and Wisconsin. He has the program record for points scored after his first 12 games with 628.

Urban Meyer and Carroll Widdoes are the only other coaches in program history to start their careers with 12 straight victories. However, neither of them won their games as convincingly as Day.
