While reading the most recent article on Jeff Hafley here on 11 W's, https://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-state-football-recruiting/2019/07/10...
I began to think to myself, Is Jeff Hafley to Ryan Day what Tom Herman was to Urban Meyer? While Herman had not worked with Meyer, he did research him in 2005 to blend his offense philosophy into his own repertoire https://www.elevenwarriors.com/2013/06/23075/ohio-state-football-the-ris... This would eventually lead to his working directly for Meyer going undefeated in his first year as co-OC (great 2 point play call against Purdue) and later on, help win the very first National Championship in the CFB playoff era.
While Day has in fact worked with Hafley in the past, I think Hafley is a lot more like Herman and Meyer then Day as was evident from his first presser when asked about DB's turning and looking for the ball. https://www.thelantern.com/2019/02/football-jeff-hafley-has-chance-to-be... While Herman had uncle Ed as co-OC and Hafley has Mattison as his co-DC, the similarities of the hires by Meyer and now Day are strikingly similar. Both Herman and Hafley can and do recruit at a superior level, both are smart and confident in their coaching philosophical system, both have come from other jobs where their coaching helped make a bad team better.
My hope is that lightning has indeed struck twice in the same place. From everything that I have seen and read, it seems this may be the case. Time will tell for sure but for now the future of Ohio State Football is indeed bright.
