Is Jeff Hafley to Ryan Day What Tom Herman Was to Urban Meyer?

I like the thought of the comparison (on-field results especially).

Hafley definitely proving his worth on the recruiting trail, and all signs point to marked results when the season gets underway.

Solid post, 'zilla - that's how it's done.

I had to run away high, so I wouldn't come home low...

I'll pile on Zilla, much better off-season discussion than ESPN or Harbaugh-bashing. Or worse, ESPN & Harbaugh bashing in the same thread.

Thanks NorCal. I was reading a lot of stuff about Hafley and it just kept bugging me. I like the comparison of the Clemson coaches and even Texas HC and DC. I think in Buckeye terms for the relating of coaches as it seemed to be a good discussion topic. I like the response as it is not a bad thing in the off season. I learned a good lesson about researching before posting today as well.

Good lesson? Just because a few fellas want to poop all over an observation and invitation for discussion?

Quality job seeing the similarities, I haven’t yet saw them until I read your post. I hope he can match the the production and influence that Herman had. It sure would be nice to keep him around for awhile, the man sounds ELITE.

If he is what Herman was to us, I really think he will give us 3 years before he moves on. If he shits in his hat or is not a good fit like Grinch or helps us win a Natty he may move along sooner. I tend to think that he sees what Day has been able to achive as well as others like Herman, Ash and Withers and he may seek that coaching stability over the NFL. Hafley is driven and I believe this drive makes him a lot like Meyer, Herman, Ash and to some extent Todd Orlando who is a Herman/Meyer-esk clone.

Agree nice post but some one show me how much our defense has improved from last year. I won't take anything away about his recruiting but show me first before I jump on any band wagon. Washington the same way not many linebackers waiting in line to sign on the dotted line in his case too. If I'm wrong I will gladly be the guy with the shovel scooping up the horse's shit that's pulling the wagon. Until I see improvement I say hold the horses.

Urbans best teams had staffs full of future head coaches. Makes sense. Days future success will require elite staffs. Wouldnt be surprised to see Hafley a HC somewhere in a few years. Hope we keep him for a little while though.

WTF? Hafley is a DB coach with an NFL pedigree, not a hotshot college offensive coordinator d-bag. Hafley was Day's peer with the Niners, not a hotshot name hired by an established head coach who is of a slightly different generation of coaches. Comparing the two hires is ridiculous, imo.

HS
buckzilla1's picture

I can see where you are coming from. Mike Yurcich would be the offensive side of the equation coming from OK. State via Shippensburg via Edinboro. While he may not be considered a hotshot name or a d-bag for that matter by most people I believe he is a quality hire. I don't recall Tom Herman being a hot shot name at the time of his hire either. Lincoln Riley was.a hot shot name but we went with Herman. I stand by the similarities as ones success is going to depend on the others much like our offensive success depended on Herman/Meyer combo so does our Day/Hafley defense combo especially after last year.

Wow, something got the DV bitches panties in a wad. Didn’t realize saying an offensive coordinator and a DB coach are rather different hires, and from different backgrounds to boot was controversial. Lol.

I don't mince words in my responses to ridiculous ideas on the interwebz. This isn't 3rd grade show n' tell, everybody clap and say yay. Too many thin skinned nancies out there. If my my original post made people butthurt, grow up is alI I can say. The differences between Hafley and Herman-and their hirings are glaringly obvious, imo.

It’s funny to complain about people being thin-skinned on the internet and immediately complain about your downvotes though.

Pointing out the hypocrisy of complaining about dv's might be my favorite observation of the month!! It should be standard policy to not start out with "WTF". Generally nothing resembling a healthy exchange of ideas follows that. You can be honest and not be aggressive. Extramedium you're my hero of the day.

Negativity is a choice.

Seems he had the title and not the pay https://www.thelantern.com/2012/01/urban-meyer-welcomes-ed-warinner-to-o... 6th paragraph down from the same source you site".”

Warinner, who will also hold the title of co-offensive coordinator for OSU, served as offensive line coach at Notre Dame for the last two seasons and added the responsibilities of run game coordinator last season.

Same as Wiki and his Ohio State Bio . I believe the title was why he left Notre Dame as he was clearly not calling the shots for the offense. The plays were called by Herman with Meyer having input during the games.

I think that Day himself is more of the comparison to Herman than Hafley is. Day was an unknown, as Herman was, who had barely worked with Meyer (grad assistant 10+ years earlier) who Meyer tapped to be his co-OC. Herman was the OC at Rice and Iowa State before getting the call to come work here. Both are whiz-kids, offensive-minded, and young at the beginning of their tenures as OC here in Columbus. One with personal problems and not as good timing ended up being the HC at a major elsewhere, one with all the intangibles you could want and even better timing ends up the HC here.

Hafley had previously worked with Day in an equivalent role on the same team in the NFL while having previous college coaching experience and recruiting chops. Herman never worked in the NFL before arriving at OSU.

Couple differences. One, Hafley is a defensive coach (though I get the comparison). Two, I would hope Hafley doesn't carry the same kind of loyalty to Day that Herman did to Meyer. If he does we're in for a coaching staff mutiny at some point down the road. I'm not taking away the fact that Herman was a great coach for us when he was here but he wouldn't even be where he's at now had Meyer not taken a chance on him as OC in 2012 and given him the opportunity to prove himself on a grand scale. And how does he repay him? By trying to bury Meyer under a shitstorm of controversy related to escapades that BOTH he and ZS were involved in when they were at OSU all because he was bitter about missing out on Garrett Wilson. There's a reason OSU fans don't like Herman nowadays and quite frankly I hope Hafley is nothing like him. It is possible to be a good coach without being like MENSA Tom.

I believe hartline is personally. I think he is a future head coach potentially at Ohio State.

I dunno. I love Brian Hartline but I don't see him being a HC, or OC for that matter. His energy and passion is for receiving. Could be wrong though!

HS

Hartline will be at least a coordinator within the next year or two if not here then somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets offers from the NFL this next year. Good thing we have keenan Bailey waiting in the wings who the receivers attribute a lot of their success to as well.

Go Bucks!

HS
Kangarooman's picture

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a plan already in place for Hartline to be co-OC in a year or two.

I don't think the Herman hire and the Hafley hire are that similar, apart from them both being up-and-coming young coaches.

Herman basically just ran Urban's offense for three years (numbers game, zone read with the occasional pass). The only thing he really added was adjusting the offense to fit Cardale Jones' strengths.

Hafley is a different animal. He's coming in with an NFL pedigree and he's being handed the keys to run the defense without Day interfering. That's a whole other level of trust.
