Like many others, I've been frustrated with the fact that it takes till halftime to get in defensive adjustments. So I want to spit-ball something here:
Presumably it takes some time to develop and communicate adjustments. Would it make sense in some situations to slow the offense and take a strategic time out in the first half to get a solid few minutes for the defense to huddle on the sideline without having to worry about going in? Start with a TV timeout when we have the ball. Line up and let the play clock get down to 2, then call a timeout. Then let the play clock get down in the single digits before running the play.
Planned for ahead it would be 3+ minutes of time where the defense wouldn't have to be watching the game. Sure, it costs a time out, but those are there to burn in the first half. It'd also be miserable as a fan with that much of a break. But perhaps it would help. A few adjustments 8-12 minutes earlier than half time could be huge.
I'm no sideline expert, so perhaps it just wouldn't work, but it crossed my mind as I watched and remembered some posters mentioning that the NFL doesn't need to wait till half-time for defensive adjustments.
