Our kickoff coverage unit has been one of the best in college football over the past several years. Needless to say, I don't like the new fair catch rule because it evens the playing field by taking away a huge variable in field position. In contrast, as I watch old games, it seems like our return unit consistently performs at a very mediocre level. Punt returns aren't much better either. I just checked what I believe is the most recent NCAA stats on kickoff and punt return averages. We don't have one player listed in the top 100 (average yards on kickoffs or punts) except CJ Saunders. He comes in at #52 averaging 6.3 yards per punt return. I know we have the athleticism to be one of the most dynamic, productive teams in the nation on kick returns. Why are we not?
