This is the first time Ohio State and Tulane will play each other in football. Ohio State is 29–3–1 all-time against current members of the American Athletic Conference.

Willie Fritz's team lost to UAB (31-24) last week and enters this contest with a 2–1 record.

  • Ohio State played a team from the AAC was against Tulsa in 2016, the Buckeyes won 48-3 in a monsoon.
  • The Buckeyes lost to a current member of the AAC was 1950. No. 10 SMU defeated Wes Fesler and 11th ranked OSU 32-27 in Ohio Stadium.
  • Ohio State played a road game against a current member of the AAC was on October 1st, 1977. The Buckeyes defeated SMU 35-7 in Dallas.
  • The Buckeyes played on the 22nd of September was 2012, No. 16 Ohio State defeated UAB 29-15.
  • Ohio State was ranked in the top 5 on September 22nd was 1984, the fifth ranked Bucks defeated No. 14 Iowa (45-26). 
  • The Buckeyes lost on 9/22 was in 2001 at No. 14 UCLA (13-6).
  • September 22, 1990 was the last time a ranked Ohio State team lost to a non-conference opponent in Columbus on this date. No. 18 USC won 35-26 in a weather-shortened game.

  • Tulane University is located in New Orleans, LA.
  • The university was established in 1834. Tulane was formerly called Medical College of Louisiana (1834-47) and University of Louisiana (1847-1884).
  • Between 1893 and 1919, Tulane's nickname was The Olive and Blue. In 1920, the nickname Green Wave was accepted. 
  • Tulane was a charter member of the SEC, the school left the SEC in 1966.

THE COACHES

Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer

  • 177–31 (.851) overall

Meyer was born in Toledo and grew up in Ashtabula. He attended Cincinnati where he played football. He started his coaching career as a defensive backs coach at St. Xavier in 1985. Meyer then took a GA position with Ohio State between 1986 and 1987. His next stops were Illinois State (1988-89), Colorado State (1990-95) and Notre Dame (1996-2000).

Bowling Green (2001-02) was his first stop as a head coach. He then had stints in Utah (2003-04) and Florida (2005-10) before coming back to the great state of Ohio.

With Fritz as head coach, Tulane has increased its win total each season. In 2017, the team averaged just under 30 points per game. The Green Wave also ranked 20th nationally in rushing last year.

In May, Tulane extended Fritz's contract through the 2023 season.
