I believe some have mentioned this here but as we think about Bill Davis and his time here at OSU (along with Greg Schiano as DC)...there've been some changes to our defensive scheme that seem to show up most with the LB play.

During Fick's time at OSU, including w/Tress, it seemed that we charged our defensive tackles with the job of eating space/occupying o-linemen SO THAT our LBs could run around and wreck teams.

Ash's cover-4 changed this somewhat...but it really seemed to change with Schiano, who prefers to let his defensive line get upfield and wreck teams. And then the defense plays man coverage and a lot of Cover-1. This means the LBs will blitz & play closer to the LOS. It also means that they have to learn how to shed blocks a lot better. I think it forces them to "think" more instead of reading & reacting.

We don't see the LBs running around wreaking havoc because they're not asked to (in the same way). Maybe it's not ALL that Bill Davis isn't coaching these guys up/is a terrible coach but a product of the scheme changes?

At the same time, maybe asking our LBs to play like they're NFL LBs (scheme and responsibility) isn't helping. We saw against TCU that when Bosa went out...we simplified things a bit...and the LBs played A LOT better.

What do you think (especially wondering if we have any football coaches in here who can speak to this)?
