This is the seventh time Ohio State and TCU will play each other in football and the first time the Buckeyes have played Texas Christian outside of Columbus. Ohio State is 4–1–1 all-time against the Horned Frogs.

Gary Patterson's team is ranked 15th and enters this contest with a 2–0 record.

Day's hometown is Manchester, NH. He attended Manchester High School and attended college at New Hampshire. Day has been in coaching for 17 years and is in his second season with Ohio State.

Patterson was hired as TCU's head coach in December of 2000. Iowa's Kirk Ferentz is the only coach who has been with the same school longer than Patterson. TCU finished a perfect 12–0 in 2009 and ended the season ranked No. 4 in the final BCS rankings. Since 2001, the Horned Frogs have won 10 or more games 10 times.

In 2014, Ohio State bumped TCU out of the inaugural College Football Playoff. The Horned Frogs defeated Ole Miss 42-3 in the 2014 Chick-fil-A Peach. The Buckeyes won the 2014 championship.
