Everybody gets to play! Wow, this team is really deep!
The last two cupcake opponents have allowed even the deepest rotations to play 2 quarters of football. Guys who are not even in the three deep but even further back. Other than experience and knowledge of the playbook they look the part. If not even more athletic and faster at times than those in the two deep. These top recruiting classes really look like top recruiting classes when you see them on the field. Some guys that I’ve enjoyed watching during this cupcake stretch include Chase young, Isaiah Pryor, Jeffrey Okudah, super Demario brothers, and Rashod Berry. They form the Core for our future buckeye teams.
The starters are starting to come together to potentially challenge the good teams once they start playing the challenging parts of the schedule such as Penn State, Michigan, the Big Ten championship game and bowl games. Hopefully those championship games... :)
Ohio State has not been even competitive in the last two big matchups against Clemson and Oklahoma. For a long time memories of Clemson football were around Charlie Bauman and Woody Hayes. Those were quickly erased and substituted with bad images of Deshaun Watson and Clemson’s defensive line. I do think that the weaknesses on the OSU defense, the linebacking corps and the defense of backs - especially Sheffield, are quickly improving including a new rotation approach...and guys just getting better at understanding how to play.
On offense the struggle is the deep ball and the offensive line. The offensive line seems to be gelling and picking up their assignment better. And, the deep ball is there against these cupcakes, but hopefully we can see it in the real games. At the very least, Ohio State seems to be defining an offensive identity and showing lots of looks that could make it tough on opposing defensive coordinators in the future.
I would love to see Ohio State continue to improve and get some momentum going for the homestretch! We’ll see that happening this weekend against Maryland!
