A Defensive Heisman

According to heisman.com, "The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work". Apparently this definition only suits those on the offensive side of the field as there have been thirty two quarterbacks and thirty nine running backs to take home the ole stiff arm. Of course, we all know that there was one defensive player to win the Heisman and he was a dirty Ohio traitor who went to that team up north.

Other than that bad man, there has been no one else to win the Heisman on the defensive side of the field and it begs the question "why". The old saying is that defense wins ball games, yet when it comes to the most coveted award a football player can win defensive players aren't really even considered. What does a player like Joey Bosa or Darron Lee have to accomplish in order for them to take home a trophy no one ever has at their positions? When will the Heisman Trophy Trust and football fans alike see the value in players who don't touch the ball every play or every other play? Will this ever happen again?
