We all know how it went (or didn't go) Saturday night. At least I got to be there live on hallowed ground. My TV wouldn't have survived.
We've blamed the receivers--and the drops were bad. Eventually, "go deep" isn't hard to defend when you know it's coming.
I think the problem is scheme. Specifically, as we have seen against aggressive D's -- if inside zone isn't working, we have no counter. We abandon the middle of the field altogether.
We have to find an answer for this, or good D's will continue to crush us. (Cal's 46, MSU, Clemson, VT).
It was no illusion - we ran slow developing GO routes about 80% of the time. Conversely, VT had either a quick passing game -- by giving their QB an Outlet in the MIDDLE of the field or rolling him out against pressure to give him time to throw, especially on long 3rd downs.
I am perplexed that we still have no quick passing game that works the short/intermediate middle of the field...going on 3 years now. I thought Herman and Meyer we offensive gurus. But if inside zone isn't working, our offense is toast.
Bonus: Michael Thomas is the real deal. He can beat press man coverage. He is our intermediate threat in the passing game: we need slants, hooks, and dig routes out of him. He took one to the house.
