Puff Johnson will remain eligible to play for Ohio State for at least three more games.
The temporary restraining order Johnson received from the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas earlier this month has been extended to Feb. 11, keeping him eligible to play for at least the Buckeyes’ next three games against Wisconsin (Jan. 31), Maryland (Feb. 5) and Michigan (Feb. 8).
A hearing on whether Johnson would receive a preliminary injunction to keep him eligible for the entirety of the season was scheduled to be held Friday, but that has now been postponed until Feb. 11, the same day the Buckeyes are scheduled to host USC at the Schottenstein Center, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
Ohio State coach Jake Diebler said earlier this week that he expects Johnson, who has played off the bench in each of the Buckeyes’ last two games, to remain eligible for the rest of the season.
“I’m not super worried, to be honest with you. I think when these TROs have been handed down and you look at those, they’re not really getting flipped. It’s pretty rare,” Diebler said Sunday. “And everything we’ve done has been in communication with our administration, and certainly leaning on them as well. I get the uncertainty that exists right now in college basketball; I think his situation is so different than some of these other situations that we’re seeing. This is completely different than a guy who’s played professionally. This is a different kind of pathway. So that’s why we’ve felt good about it and feel good about it. I don’t anticipate there being any kind of major changes with how we’re progressing.”
