Statistically, Patricia’s defense was better than Haines’ defense in 2025. Ohio State’s defense held its opponents to just 9.3 points and 219.1 yards per game, the best marks for any FBS defense since Alabama held opponents to 8.2 points and 183.6 yards per game in 2011.
Haines’ defense, however, led Indiana to a national championship while finishing second in the country behind only Ohio State with 11.7 points allowed per game. The Hoosiers, who held the Buckeyes to just 10 points in the 2025 Big Ten Championship Game, led the nation with 129 tackles for loss.
Haines has been Indiana’s defensive coordinator since 2024, following Curt Cignetti to Indiana after previously working for Cignetti at James Madison, Elon and IUP. Haines, who grew up in Piqua, Ohio, signed a three-year contract extension with Indiana in December.
