So, after a lot of reading and discussion, I have a few thoughts on the CFP selections and fallout. I know some of these things were discussed by many in bits and pieces in some posts, but I'm trying to consolidate.
1. I read about Notre Dame making a deal that if they are in the top 12 of the country, they automatically get a bid? I see problems with this.
a. Why do they get their own deal? Will other conferences/teams want their own deals?
b. With a deal in place, why schedule any powerhouse teams? Just beat mid teams and make the playoffs, especially without a conference.
2. With the complaining by teams like Texas and ND, why would they schedule tough non-conference games?
a. I don't think Texas should be in, but why wouldn't they just cancel our game against them next year? Why take the chance on an extra loss? It seems college football was encouraging tough non-conference games, but the result this year seems to caution against that.
b. Were any other teams hurt by out of conference losses against tough foes that they didn't have to play against?
3. Will conference championships go away?
a. I realize they are money-makers for conferences, and Alabama wasn't penalized for getting stomped in theirs, but that raised more controversy in itself as a 3-loss team that did not seem to be one of the best 12 in the country got in.
b. What's to stop a team from not going all out in the conference championship game in the future if it doesn't really matter? I know it matters to the coaches and players, but does it for the program at large?
