Which coaches can you remember who were way too arrogant and never really got results? Think short sleeved Brady Hoke with no headset. I am pretty sure Sherron Moore will be there in a few years.
Thinking about this topic, I started to reminisce about watching opponents, that I really did not like, lose embarrassing games. Brian Kelly at ND was fun to watch lose, but Brian Kelly at LSU was 10 fold that. On the other end of the spectrum is James Franklin, never really enjoyed watching him lose, just knew it was coming, like Mark Richt. RichRod was also completely fun to watch, but not really an unlikable guy. John L Smith at MSU was another fun one to watch, but not really a bad hire for MSU, because, well, they are MSU.
Bellicheck at UNC is pretty unlikeable, but no one cares about UNC.
This brings me to the self proclaimed “schematic advantage” Charlie Weis. Anyone remember the funniest game of all time, 2006 Notre Dame versus MSU, John L Smith versus Charlie Weis? Just watch it — trust me.
Anyways, Weis was a self proclaimed offensive genius whom Notre Dame ended up paying very very handsomely to go away.
Is Jim Knowles the defensive equivalent of Charlie Weis? He seems to think he is way smarter than everyone, but that doesn’t really translate to on the field success. We all know that Knowles headset was basically unplugged after the trip to Oregon last year. Next year, Penn State will be paying Knowles handsomely to go away.
Who is the worst coaching hire you can remember, combining overpayment and underachievement?
