With quite a few big games happening this weekend, I think we were all interested how voters would react. Several teams like Ohio St, Indiana, and Bama picked up big road wins, and most notably, Texas upsetting top 10 Oklahoma. And unfortunately, that’s where the problem lies…
After upsetting a top 10 SEC opponent, AP rules dictate that Texas must jump into the top 10 themselves. Everything was moving as long with that ranking as expected, until one SEC voter pointed out that this would give OSU a quality win. Chaos ensued, as voters tried to determine how to balance two extremes: vaulting Texas to #7, or putting them down unranked with Illinois to prevent OSU from having a ranked quality win.
See, the media mind can’t comprehend it. Can’t give OSU a reason to be a legitimate #1 (this clearly belongs to the SEC), but also couldn’t fathom not rewarding a SEC school for such an accomplishment. In the end, the only possible course of action was to suspend the weekly AP poll, in hopes the situation may resolve itself on its own by next week.
