This is from the MSU game. Punt play, with a false start. Defense comes through and slams into the kicker. Kicker is now out for 6-8 weeks.
How is this not a penalty? Yeah, I get that the play is dead, but we have a situation where the whistle being blown should have no bearing on avoiding the kicker. In fact, the defense has that much more of a reason not to make contact, given that the whistles should start their minds going into stop mode.
I just see it as a de facto: False start = free shot. Presumably a false start would negate penalties for chop-blocking and horse-collaring. And I have to wonder, if you don't call roughing the kicker because of a false start, what about targeting?
Or was this a blown no-call by the refs?
