OSU engineering researchers have come closer to e-textiles by embedding circuits into fabrics, and "the tech could be used to create everything from a t-shirt that boosts your cellphone signal, to a hat that tracks brain activity". One can imagine the possibilities, but I'm not sure how many wash cycles the fabrics can take. The overview is here
