Jim Herbstreit, the father of Kirk Herbstreit, passed away today. The former Ohio State running back, defensive back and captain was 77. Jim and Kirk Herbstreit became the second father and son combo to be named captains at Ohio State. The elder Herbstreit played between 1958 and 1960. He rushed for 102 yards, averaged 3.2 yards per carry and scored one touchdown during his Ohio State career.
After his playing days he was an assistant for both Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler. After a few seasons Jim Herbstreit left football to enter the business world.
From the Columbus Dispatch:
Jim Herbstreit had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease a couple of years ago, according to his son, but he “died suddenly this morning,” Kirk Herbstreit told The Dispatch. “It’s a tough day for my family and I.”
The world will be a better place when there is a cure for Alzheimer's disease.
