The producer worked on every Beatles album produced. Sir George Martin is sometimes referred to as the fifth Beatle, a title Sir Paul McCartney believes is well deserved,
He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour that he became a true friend to me and my family. If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George. From the day that he gave The Beatles our first recording contract, to the last time I saw him, he was the most generous, intelligent and musical person I’ve ever had the pleasure to know.
However it didn't start out so well. When the band first preformed in front of him their equipment was so bad that the producer brought in new equipment and engineers,
The band duly set up in Studio Three at Abbey Road on the afternoon of 6 June, 1962 but their road-worn instruments initially caused some problems. Worst of all was Paul McCartney's amp, which was distorting so badly that engineers had to wheel up a vast replacement speaker from EMI's echo chamber.
"I got nothing out of The Beatles' equipment except for a load of noise, hum and goodness-knows-what," engineer Norman Smith later told Sound On Sound.
He was still skeptical after hearing Love Me Do but after Sir Martin asked if there was anything the band didn't like George Harrison responded "'well, for a start,' replied George Harrison, 'I don't like your tie.'" Sir Martin ultimately decided to sign the band and the rest is history. Thank you for all the music you made Sir George Martin you will be missed.
