Acting is one of several careers Mr. George has taken on since retiring from football in 2004. He is also a financial adviser and teaches the business of sports at Ohio State University, his alma mater.
But Broadway — and, earlier, Shakespeare — is a rare detour for former athletes, who, if they enter show business, usually choose television and movies. Among the few exceptions are Paul Robeson, who played football at Rutgers before appearing in “Show Boat” and “Othello,” and the New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath, who lived up to his Broadway Joe nickname when he joined a 1983 production of “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.”
