Rutgers Must Sever All Ties with Woman-Beating Ray Rice

Ray Rice deserved to be banished from the NFL when he was shown, like a hyena dragging its kill back to its lair, dragging his unconscious then-fiancée from an Atlantic City elevator.

Not that it took more than 10 seconds to deduce how Janay Palmer lost consciousness, but now we have video proof of a caveman in action. (And now, of course, the NFL is lying about what they knew and when they knew it.)

This is bad news for Ray Rice, the NFL, and fans of the NFL who claim to care about women

It's also bad news for Rutgers, who now must sever ties with their former star.

From Steve Politi of NJ.com:

Start with the highlight video that appears during games at High Point Solutions Stadium, the one that trumpets all the Rutgers players now in the NFL. That needs to go first, because the last thing Rutgers needs now is to put its most prominent player on display during its primetime Big Ten debut on Saturday night.

But Rutgers can't stop there. It needs to take down the photos – in the press box, in the recruiting lounge, in the locker room, in the Hale Center lobby, on its website. The university can't scrub Ray Rice from its history, but it sure can't try to celebrate it any more.

[...]

All Rutgers can do is make sure Rice is no longer the face of its football program, which he has been from the moment he emerged as the star of that 2006 team that cracked the national rankings. Rutgers rode Rice to its best season ever and has been riding him ever since, as its unofficial marketing and recruiting ambassador.

It's important to note Ray Rice, in the aftermath of the first video being released, let his lawyer go on the radio and slander his wife.

It's the American way to sweep the dirt of athletes under the rug — after all, who would score our points if not them? — but Ray Rice's actions are too depraved.

Does Rutgers (and the Ravens and the NFL) agree that beating women is deplorable? Then they need to get rid of Ray Rice.
