It is much easier to gamble using insider information than trying to fix matches, at least in the usa. For example, make friends with a trainer or team manager, find out if star point guard is having problems with bad grades or recent fight with girlfriend. Bet accordingly. Do this with a smaller d1 schools like akron or toledo where it is easier to get access.
I know a guy who played center for a d1 team, he says there were always middle aged men trying to find out information on players such as minor injuries or personal problems. Professional gamblers.
