Despite a record crowd (107,517) at Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes were picked apart by Virginia Tech, surrendering seven sacks, three interceptions and a whole lot of heartburn.

The Hokies' win snapped several Ohio State winning streaks:

  • 25: Regular season wins
  • 35: Home opener wins (Penn State was the last team to do it, winning 19–0 in 1978)
  • 64: Home wins against unranked, non-conference opponents (Florida State was the last unranked, non-conference foe to beat Ohio State in Ohio Stadium, winning 34–17 in 1982.
