Joe Thomas Barrett IV: The Distributor

By DJ Byrnes on August 19, 2014 at 6:13p

JT Barrett — Joe Thomas Barrett IV, son of Joe Thomas III — is the next man up at Ohio State

Mark Pantoni, Ohio State's Director of Player Personnel — a football mind, if you will — seems to think the Buckeyes will be in good hands. That's good enough for me.

JTB IV may never be Braxton Miller, but the good news is the Buckeyes don't need him to be to succeed. If the redshirt freshman can distribute the magic diamond efficiently... it's not as if the Texan will want for weapons around him.

It's the power of the unit, after all.

This team is dying for a Craig Krenzel type season given the stable of weapons stockpiled on the offensive side of the ball. Barrett, by all indications, has that "football mind" that made Krenzel a champion. Not to mention that he's a pretty darn good athlete, too. I'll take our chances.

Let's not go too crazy, as JT is only slightly ahead of Cardale.

If Jones comes on in the next week, he could be the starter vs Navy.  Since the OL will probably go thru some growing pains, I'd rather have a 250-pounder taking on blitzers than a 210-pounder with repaired ACL. And I would prefer that our backup QB not be the 4th stringer in the first week or so.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

If you can't win your conference, just quietly accept your non-playoff bowl game.

AJBor41's picture

JTB4 is listed at 225 and is better equipped to avoid blitzers with his quickness and timely release, in my opinion.

ibuck's picture

Perhaps you're right. My point was that I don't want another QB injury while the OL gains needed experience. This preseason, OSU has already had a player re-injure a repaired shoulder and a player re-injure a repaired ACL. That's enough.

And Urban's already said both QB's will likely play.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

If you can't win your conference, just quietly accept your non-playoff bowl game.

Yep, Go Bucks!

Im behind this team 100%, and ready to watch it happen.

JT is going to face blitz after blitz after blitz for a while.  Going to be fun to watch this team fight for it.

We need to come up with a better nickname for the guy. Somehow I don't think any quarterback wants to be called distributor or game manager.

You're probably right, but that is honestly all this team needs. I was just hoping to see Braxton distribute this year and not have to do it with his legs. I guess this forces that gameplan...

OfficerRabbit's picture

Another member in a couple other forums is pushing for ".50 Cal" due to his last name being Barrett.  I like it, especially if he starts slinging passes and gives some truth to the nickname.

They say that JTB4's not as good a runner as Braxton, and therefore not as good, but this kid seems to have enough of an arm and a Krenzel-type brain that could make him more unpredictable than Braxton, in the end - defenses will always have to respect his arm, too. And, after all, that's what made John Elway so damned effective. Everyone in the country knew what Braxton was going to do before the play game season started.

I'll take an actual passer over Miller every day.  We haven't had a good throwing QB for what, a decade now?  Why not?  When I think of the two QBs that we should have next year, I think Leak/Tebow.

All im hoping for out of him is ball control and staying healthy. He isnt the runner XBraX is, SO WHAT? Who is? They say he doesnt have the arm strength that XBraX and Jones have, SO WHAT. We wont need to throw 60 yards deep if our Defense does their job. Intermediate routes will win us games. Screen Passes, short crossing routes. distributing to the TE's the whole game can open up. If we have the playmakers we think we do then they will make plays but we're gonna need the Hustle, and Determination to extend plays. This has gotta be a physical YAC Offense this year in order to be successful. Our Defense has to be the leader this year with all the inexperienced/unproven players on offense the Defense has to give us the opportunity to succeed while our Offense also goes through growing pains

I have complete faith in that young man's ability to distribute the rock. Let's not forget that he was EXTREMELY highly rated coming out of high school (let's also take that with a grain of salt as high school rankings don't always translate to the next level). He wouldn't be at OSU if they didn't think he would be able to contribute.

I feel awful for Braxton but I'm actually looking forward to this season. I think its going to be interesting to say the least.

Joe Thomas, this is YOUR team now.  Take charge and lead it to victory, one day at a time, one game at a time.  Look at the talent around you and lean on them to do their jobs.  Your job is to get them in the right play and get the ball to the right one of those weapons.

So go have some fun.  Play some football.  Win some trophies.

JT is the man for the job! Ohio State never averaged 40 pts a game under Tress and look how many games we won. We only feel like we need a high octane offense because the D has been so bad. If this D can get back to 2002 or 2005 form then I see no reason why 30 PPG can't do the job. This offense has more speed and talent than any Tress offense ever thought to have. No need to panic. Let us fly under the radar and surprise everyone, especially those talented boys from up north (I'm referring to MSU of course).

Now I kinda wish we started the season with a home game.......just to help get J.T.'s feet wet. But in the long run, it maybe better to throw in the fire and test his resolve. I just hope J.T. can mentally handle the adjustment of being a 3rd string QB all spring and summer to jumping up as the starter......focus.........focus........and execution, GO GET'EM J.T.!!!

I think JT will be just fine. But I wish Kenny G was on the sidelines, if for no other reason than to give JT tips and pointers. He would have a calming effect on JT. Why hasn't Urbs hired him yet as an asst. QB coach?

Hope Braxton gets better ASAP.  On another note, I will say that I think JT will distribute the ball better than Braxton has shown the ability to, can't wait to watch the season with all our weapons at the helm.  Have a feeling there will be a Texas connection, "JT to Dontre" we will be hearing quite a bit and Samuel will come in and do big things right away as well.

Honestly I think he is going to do really good. I mean he was the No.1 Dual Threat QB of his class, and have you seen him throw the ball? Yea I know Herman says he is a distant 3rd, as far as just flat out chucking one goes. But his accuracy and mechanics are flawless. Throughout the spring game I was shocked that he was a 3rd stringer below Jones. With as many athletes as we have he should have a plethora of guys to distribute the ball to. Yea he will have some growing pains, but I really like the looks of this guy.
