Gene Smith Would "Love the Opportunity" to Play Notre Dame

Ever since Urban Meyer admitted to "discussions" on Ohio State playing in a regular season neutral site game, the speculation on possible foes has run rampant. One, in particular though, garnered more tract than others: The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame

Smith, who admitted in September 2013 he asks Notre Dame for a game "every year," would still welcome a clash between the two traditional midwestern powers and is still on that hunt, according to Buckeye Sports Bulletin's Jeff Svoboda:

I would love to have that opportunity down the road.

Smith stresses nothing is imminent, and Svoboda points out Ohio State's schedule is full through 2016 and features prominent programs in out-of-conference scheduling all the way through Texas in 2021.

Notre Dame hasn't beaten Ohio State in football since 1936.

Where would the neutral site be? Indy? Cleveland? Cincy? Jerry World? None of those would make as much sense as a home-and-home.

I think it'd be Indy. If Ohio State played there against any team besides ND, UM, or MSU, it would look like am OSU home game

You're probably right but I hope not. I wouldn't attend this neutral site game unless played some where more exciting. I was not impressed by Indy last year during B1G Champ. Plus that stadium didn't allow us to have an adult beverage while sitting in our seats. They blamed that on the B1G. I vote Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, New Orleans, Atlanta or even Mexico. We'd lose recruiting exposure in Mexico, but not many athletes in Indiana, either.

I wouldn't be surprised by a Soldier Field billing, if a neutral one-timer. I foresee a late August Thursday night/Kickoff Classic-style event.

I'm Ron Burgundy's picture

Well, you lost me at "not impressed by Indy last year during B1G Championship."  There is not and probably never will be a more perfect destination for the B1G championship game, all things considered.  Unless the outcome of the game is clouding your judgment, in which case I'll give you a free pass, because that sure did suck.

Back on topic, yeah it makes a lot of sense to play a neutral site game against ND in SEC country or Mexico.

Yes.  Downtown Indy is what all comparably sized cities should aspire to be.

+2 HS
seafus26's picture

I'm sure I am clouded by the end result of the game. But the weather and the town's was horrid and it was just a small time town. I skipped the Super Bowl the year it was in Indy. For one, it was in Indy and also because I feared the same weather we experienced at our championship. They actually ended up having great weather for that Super Bowl week. I'd roll the dice on that one again, and bet weather in Indy won't be pleasant in December-Febuary. That's not a place I wish to visit for vacation again. The city seemed over whelmed by the amount of people too. The trip from airport to downtown seemed like forever due to Interstates that were probably no larger than 3-4 lanes. How did they get a Super Bowl? I was partially joking about Mexico. It'd be cool, but ain't gonna happen. As for the SEC territory, we recruit down there too. Those coaches probably do not want us done there creating more exposure for our brand letting coaches and recruits come out to our practices for that game, ala how Oklahoma uses the Red River rivalry to their advantage and has so many kids on their roster from DFW. I am shocked LSU is letting Whisky gain exposure in their often hunted grounds of Houston, this year. Unless, they feel Whisky's recruiting draw is little threat to them (however I'll go on record saying I think Whisky wins that game, this year).

Go Bucks and michigan STILL SUCKS!

I've been a fan of Ohio State & Notre Dame since 1977 & 1978 respectively (8 & 9 years old) and watching those 3 games when they squared off was absolutely gut wrenching. I LOVE both teams with equal passion and ferocity. All I did was watch those 3 games, no cheering, no nothing. If I had a vote, it would be a big fat NO!!!

Ohio has a huge Catholic population. It's actually one of the reasons Ohio State and Notre Dame traditionally don't play each other. Even Woody Hayes talked about this.

Not necessarily, because I was encouraged to like Notre Dame along with OSU because of the Catholic thing (my cousin also has a Master's degree from Notre Dame).  Of course I didn't listen - I just said FUCK Notre Dame unless they're playing TTUN, USC, Cryami, Free Seafood University, State Penn, or an SEC team.

I agree. Yes Ohio does have a big Catholic population but what does religion have to do with a college football game. I don't think a religious war will break out lol.

If we played Notre Dame I would rather do a 1 and 1 instead of play them at a neutral site... but I doubt this game will happen anytime soon.

We're already thought of as a better football program than ND, so by playing them we'd gain hardly anything but risk quite a bit.

I'd rather play a relevant program something like LSU, Bama, one of the florida schools is always good...

Would you rather beat UCF 72-0 or Notre Dame 36-7?

osuguy2008's picture

Why would we have to play this as a neutral site game? It's not as if the two schools aren't relatively close to each other. Does Gene Smith seriously not think that a home-and-home wouldn't generate the same ( if not more ) revenue than doing a single neutral site game? Also, don't you think Urban would rather have ND come to Columbus ( possibly for a night game) to show recruits the atmosphere instead of playing in some corporate stadium in Chicago or Indianapolis? If you bring ND to Columbus you most likely get College Gameday and an electric game day atmosphere which Urban can use for any recruits in town or for any of those recruits watching on TV.  I seriously think college athletic directors love out thinking the room.

+1 HS
Mean Mr Mustard's picture

The neutral site thing is a compromise between the two schools.  Ohio St does not have any room left on their schedule to negotiate a home and home.

Ohio St is looking to toughen up their schedule this year and adding a ranked team would help.  There is a possibility that there will be five undefeated teams at the end of the year, so a game against ND would help.  To what extent,  not much at all, but it helps.  There is also the iron sharpens iron/battle tested reason.  Last but not least, it would make OSU money

Jbuckham94's picture

The schedule is full through 2016, so a game against Notre Dame would be a couple years in the future if it even happens.

Even at a neutral site, one team has to be designated the home team. That way you can invite recruits.

P.S. And decide which TV contract has primacy.

The horseshoe would be insane for a ND home game. I don't understand why multiple teams in the B1G play ND yearly, but we don't.

You wouldn't be able to talk too much shit could talk a little less shit about our schedule if we beat up on ND every year in the 3rd or 4th game.

Wasn't there a rumor going around about a series with Notre Dame between 2019 and 2022?  I'm game as hell for playing them.

I was talking about this with my friend that roots for TTUN, and he said "Notre Dame is scared to play us so good luck".  So of course, I got in my small little shot "well then they should definitely be scared of us".

@ BuckeyeByBirth - I'm sorry, but, a person CANNOT be a huge fan of OSU and ND. You have to pick one. Same goes if someone says they are a huge fan of OSU and Michigan...can't be done. Since World War I, the big 3 football schools in the Midwest are OSU, UofM and ND. Like I said, you have to pick ONE SCHOOL who your loyalties belong too.

Why give ND the added exposure? Let them rot in the ACC.

jmoore3309's picture

I think it is a bit harsh to criticize someone for the fact that they like two schools. Growing up in NW Ohio, I also liked both OSU and ND.  Growing up Catholic, my dad liked ND, the priest liked ND and the nuns liked ND.  My dad who was an immigrant from Scotland of Irish decent also made sure that we knew who Ohio's team was and I can remember him pointing that out to me one New Year's day..  Liking both was not an issue, as (as long as Woody was there) you knew they were never going to play.

That being said, as I got older and it came time to go to college, it became more difficult to root for two.  No one wanted to beat the shit out of the Irish more than I did when we played in 95 and as the years have passed, my allegiance has been one sided.  That's just me however, and I don't see a reason why someone (like my dad) who paid tuition for 3 to go to OSU could like both.

Go Bucks!

Ohio State needs to schedule a big name every year. Even is ND sucks, playing them sounds a lot better for strength of schedule than a Cincinnati who that is a similar team talent wise, if not better. We need all the help we can get as long as we are in the B1G

I think it would be good to play ND again.  Would be a national draw that would create a lot of interest.  Plus would be great to pound them like back in the 90s!!!
