Shelley Meyer Gives Tour of Meyer Compound, Talks Losing and Urban's Long-Term Future

Urban Meyer makes north of $4,000,000 annually, so it's no surprise he retires every night to a magnificent compound. His wife, Shelley, who teaches a spinning course and a nursing course at Ohio State, is still adjusting to five-degree temperatures and white sand being replaced by "kind of white" snow.

Her beloved plastic pink flamingos also violated her Home Owners' Association agreement. (Proving yet again that Home Owners' Associations are the worst.)

The full tour of Meyer's house can be found HERE. (You're damn straight there's a picture of Wayne Woodrow Hayes on Urban's walls.)

Most interesting, however, is her take on how Urban handled his first loss as Ohio State frontman. She says Urban, who "can't stand" to lose, handled the loss "okay" and has a "changed perspective" now. That's about as good an answer as we could expect.

And on his long-term future in Columbus?

“This is the last job. I mean, no matter what people say on Twitter, or message boards, or what – THIS is the job.”

Does this mean he'll have insane career longevity?

“I really honestly don’t believe he will coach that long. It’s just too hard. He just goes too hard.”

I don't think I'm alone when I say: May Urban Meyer coach Ohio State for the next 300 years!

Meyer's exit will definitely be on his terms, it won't be for another gig, and it won't be for a long time IMO. I think 10 years would be around the number for me. I just don't see him leaving sooner. Less than 10 would mean, for me, he wants another job, but I don't think any other college job (even ND) is enough for him to want to leave OSU, nor do I think he wants to go to the NFL. So, Ill stick with 10, and wouldn't be shocked if its slightly more. He respects the hell out of Earle Bruce, and EB freakin loves OSU, even after all the bs that went about with his firing. Earle loves Woody, and I believe there is a line between Woody, Earle, and Urban in respect to their respect for the position of Head Coach at OSU. If Woody hadn't punched Bauman and Earle was allowed to keep his job, and, especially for Earle, they got to choose when they wanted to leave OSU (given in Woody's case, outside of punching a player), Woody would have coached till his death and Earle would still be coaching the Buckeyes. Urban is similar but knows his limitations health wise. Factoring in an additional point that Urban respects what Joe Paterno was about (leaving the Sandusky stuff out of it) and Joe Pa's dedication to PSU, I don't see Urban leaving OSU for a long time.

You forgot one James Tressel.  He would still be coaching our Buckeyes if not for the stupidity of tat-gate.

I have to be honest Urban and his health have always worried me.  I know he is "changed" but watching the stress that the 2012 MSU game, this years *ichigan game, the BIG 10 title and the Orange bowl probably put him through scares me.  I could not be happier with another leader for this program than Urbs and I hope he does stick around for a while. (10 - 12 years) Truthfully, hearing Shelley talk about how he handled the losses gives me so much more confidence in how changed he actually is and how much more he looks after his health which is ultra important to me.

I hate Homeowners Associations! Only a M!ch!g@n grad could have came up with something like that.

+2 HS
hit_the_couch's picture

I hate them too, but they're kinda necessary to an extent. They don't have to be as nazi as many are though. I heard some horror stories about homes getting foreclosed on for not following simple rules.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

Ashtabula's picture

Shelley is not the prototypical "coach's wfie", but she is the glue to that family.  As for Urban's longevity, I know he wants to make a few more legimate runs at a NC.  However, if he doesn't land a QB in this next recruiting class that he thinks can take him to the promised land, then I'm not sure he'll hang on more than a few years.

+1 HS
d5k's picture

Well, if he lands Gibson on top of JT Barrett who I think will be more than solid I don't think the QB position will be why he moves on.  He strikes me as a go out on top type of guy though.

TCOB_6's picture

He currently has Barrett (whom he recruited) and if he holds on a few years he has Clark coming. Not to mention he's in good standings with some highly touted QB recruits this year.

+1 HS
Ashtabula's picture

I think Gibson is the key.  I don't think Barrett is the dynamic playmaker that will keep him around and I think Clark is too far away.  Cherish this time we have with one of the greatest coaches ever.

-3 HS
TCOB_6's picture

I don't know if I can accept the theory that the future of Ohio State football as we know it revolves around the recruitment of 1 high school senior quarterback.

+7 HS
Ashtabula's picture

My theory is it revolves around us signing a difference maker at the QB position.  If it isn't Gibson, maybe it is somebody else.  But, a few more strike-outs at the most important position on Urban's football team might leave him thinking an assistant AD position sounds comfy.

-5 HS
Estrada's picture

Is it really fair to use the phrase "strike out" in regards to our current QB roster?  While JT and Collier weren't at the very top of the staff's want list for that position (for their respective recruiting cycles), that doesn't mean either or both couldn't become a difference maker at the QB position.  The truth is we have little idea how boom or bust either of those kids could be, and we won't know for a little while longer.

This isn't to say that the staff shouldn't be looking for the next big thing at the QB position each and every year (given the uncertainty and volatility of recruiting), just that we can't really know whether a particular year was a hit or miss until a little while later.

+2 HS
Ashtabula's picture

I think using the word strikeout was unfair, especially because I personally think Barrett is going to be good. But, I wonder if he excites Urban enough to keep grinding.

+1 HS
teddyballgame's picture

I don't want another "playmaker" if it means a QB who wants to use his legs more than his arm.  Sometimes the right play is simply an accurate pass.  We are going to have plenty of receiving options on the roster now it would be a waste to let a QB scramble around half the time.

We should be careful not to overrate Gibson as a QB.  Yes, he has a TON of potential, but his passing isn't anything special right now.  A lot of the other teams recruiting him are hoping they land him just so they can "give him his chance" to battle for QB, but I think deep down they see him getting beat and being converted to WR.

Is it true that the only coaching job Urban was fired from was the GA position here when Earle Bruce was let go?  The dude never took a lateral move, the closest would probably be Florida -> OSU.

I think that he will retire here at TOSU and will (after) take a job in the athletic dept. say AD or he may go back into broadcasting too. He will coach total here around 15-18 years, so another 12-15 years. He loves it too much and will keep doing it until he knows he no longer can. He is what 48-49 yrs. old? He is still pretty young. He will coach into his 60s I think. I hope he is here for 30+ years tho. Lol He can stay as long as he wants to. He is and will be a Buckeye for life. GO BUCKS

You can google "Urban Meyer House".. then you can Google Earth it. You can pretty much zoom in and see him doing the back stroke in his swimming pool.

There is no privacy anymore.

But the Muirfield scavenger hunt was pretty cool anyway.

UFM will become what Tressel was attempting to become...the next OSU coaching legend. Don't get me wrong, Tressel has his place established, but obviously one title and a scandal will prevent one from reaching the rarified air of "Legend". It's subjective, but if Urban wins a few titles and avoids the off-field land-mines, I think he deserves to be mentioned in the same conversation as The Great W.W. Hayes.

Somebody with more ambition (and time) can create a post for this debate.

Tressel is a legend. He is the only coach I know who truly cares about his kids. There was no "scandal" because lets be real, that was a bunch of ncaa b.s. Tressel was smart to not jeopardize those kids' careers over a few free tats.

+3 HS
bafiesta's picture

Tressel signed a letter that said he would abide by the NCAA laws.  Then he signed another stating he know of no violations.  Finally, the kids futures were in no jeopardy whatsoever, they would have missed 4 games.

I think Tressel did far more good than bad, but there is no excusing the lies he told covering tatgate.

I would offer that he fell on the sword for somebody.  Recall the initial press conference when he was asked if he told anyone about what was going on.  He started to answer the question and Smith jumped in to stop his answer.  Why?  My gut tells me he told somebody about what was going on and he was told to let it ride and hopefully it would go away.  Perhaps some day we will know what happened behind the scenes.

I thought he'd stay 10 years when he arrived.  Any OSU fan should be doing backflips if he stays 10 more years on top of the two he's already put in.  We'd all love for Urban to coach for 20-25 years, but this job (as great as it seems) is extremely demanding no matter who the head coach is.  The days of a man coaching a program 20+ years are over.

+2 HS
dlb72osu's picture

That kinda goes along with my thinking. Those 15-20 year comments are wishful thinkings but we are all aware of how much UFM wrings out of each and every day. I do not believe anyone can sustain that level for that many years. But for however long it is, let us enjoy and be grateful for them.

Something tells me, that's exactly what Penn State fans said about JoePa circa 1994...

Not to be a hater but I'm not really impressed by Meyers house. Its nice enough but it's very plainly decorated for a million dollar + house. If I was making more than 4 million dollars a year I'd live somewhere far more interesting than that.
