Torrance Gibson Will Visit Ohio State This Week

It happened late last night, so don't feel bad if you missed it, but prepare yourself regardless because it's happening. Yes, it's happening. After months of speculation, rumors and innuendo, it's actually going to go down. Torrance Gibson, a freak athlete among freak athletes, is going to visit Ohio State. Gibson announced the visit was 100-percent on via his Twitter last night.

Gibson — who has never actually visited Columbus  — has been considered anywhere from a Buckeye lock, to lean, to longshot over the last few tumultuous months and it appears that the pursuit of the 6-foot-4, 200-pounder is back on for Ohio State. The question that will be asked 1000 times and answered exactly never? Is Gibson a quarterback, or a wide receiver?

That, I think, depends on where he ends up applying his signature come February. For now, the Buckeyes are back in the thick of things and after seeing him for a week straight in Oregon at The Opening, I absolutely believe that Torrance Gibson can be a national championship winning college quarterback in an offense that fits his game, and the Buckeyes are absolutely one of those few places. Do I believe that Gibson is better suited at wide receiver if he wants to make NFL dollars from football? Absolutely.

For now, the enthusiasm has to be tempered and things taken one day at a time. Gibson, for his part, doesn't even know exactly how long he'll be at Ohio State this week, he just knows when he'll be there.

"I'm not sure (how long we'll be there at Ohio State,)" Gibson told Eleven Warriors late Monday night. "I'm going with my coach, and we're heading up there Thursday night."

The talented Mr. Gibson did take his own enthusiasm back to Twitter moments after cementing his travel plans however.

Ohio State fans are fired up as well, Torrance, trust us on that.

Getting this kid on campus could have a huge impact on this class.. A talent (at least rated talent) like this could get us back in on some of the top tier skill position guys.. Unfortunately If he does chose tOSU it might be too late in the process to have any real impact.. But TG, Sweat, DH and Burrell (sp?) are the guys on my wish list.

Birm, how was his passing performance at the Elite 11? Did he get invited solely based off of his athleticism? If he decided to commit would this affect Burrows commitment? Thanks.

From an article I found -

>As a quarterback, he's far from a finished product. On Sunday, he struggled at times with mechanics, particularly when it came to throwing touch passes. At one point during drills, while other quarterbacks were getting normal reps in drills, Gibson was pulled aside by camp counselor Jordan Palmer, the former NFL quarterback and Carson Palmer's brother. The pair worked on the left-handed Gibson's release and footwork, with the counselor urging him to relax when throwing mid-range passes, saying "throw it just like I'm five yards away."

Really? Jordan is selling himself as a NFL QB? Technically speaking he is correct but in real life I find that hilarious. The Carson's brother part says a lot more about his qualifications.

Really SwainPM? Really? Burrow a 3 star ranked 362 in the nation at 247Sports, compared to the 5 star 25th,ranked (2nd ranked ATH) in Gibson? Burrows' couldn't carry Gibsons' pads. The Burrow offer is security in case the elite  athlete decides to stay in the south. Same as  the 2014 offer to Stephen Collier (627th NAT 19th DUAL) when the optimal choice was Deshaun Watson (41st NAT 1st top ranked dual QB), who chose Clemson. Burrows is a backup plan, which is smart recruiting.

I wish his visit was during a game with LeBron present, but it's now. So Buckeye Nation, show up with me on campus to show some 'LUV' for Torrance and show him our school & team spirit; it's still summer on Campus.

From what I read he did both positions. At first he threw ok but according to the reporter it was painfully obvious he struggled on tougher throws but did very well as a receiver.

Maybe you should eat a shoe.  You know, just so somebody does.

Yes, the Buckeyes were included in Waller's top four schools — along with Alabama, Notre Dame and Northwestern — but Ohio State's unlikely to offer according to sources we've spoken with. The Buckeyes are happy with Joe Burrow and will not be offering another quarterback unless something changes significantly with Burrow's status. If they do, slap some steak sauce on a pair of Sperry's, because I'll eat my shoe.

That was a seemingly rhetorical question he asked in a reply to another person saying he would have to eat a shoe. If Birm actually is confused about whether or not he said he would eat a shoe, this is not the evidence you're looking for.

EDIT: It would help us out if you could give us the link to that thread or the thread title so we could see for ourselves.

Are we forgetting Joe Burrow? I'm looking forward to a passing QB in our system, not an Auburn type offense. Not trying to knock the kid in anyway, I'm just looking for a diff skill set in our QB.

Not disagreeing with that but if you look at the past 10 national title winning QB's, there aren't a lot who were runners first and passers 2nd. I understand he's going to have some time to develop because I believe Barrett will be our starting QB after Miller leaves. I'm just looking more for an Alex Smith/Utah offense.

+2 HS
apack614's picture

That isnt completley true within the last 10 years some of the QB's just off the top of my head are Vince Young, Leak and Tebow, Marcus Randall, JaMarcus Russel, Cam Newton, and Winston which some of those are debatable but then again so is Braxton you can't call him a run first guy anymore but I wouldn't call him a pass first guy either. So I think we will be fine having a hundred more just like Braxton (minus the injuries)

"If we worked half as hard as our band, we'd be champions." - Woody Hayes

+2 HS
d5k's picture

Russel and Winston were never dual threat guys.  But still I completely agree that Braxton was good enough last year let alone what he can do this year to get the job done.  Our pass defense was disappointing and that is being overhauled in a promising way in my opinion.

Dual threat QB's have in general dominated college football the last decade so it is an odd comment to restrict yourself to national title winners when that will be biased basically by Nick Saban coached teams which win on talent, discipline and defense.  Ideally you'd have those 3 things and an explosive offense which is what Urban is trying to do.  You need a dynamic player at QB to be an elite offense, whether that is with quick decision-making, athletic ability, big arm, or all of the above.

+2 HS
CuseGirl's picture

Winston is a dual threat guy but he's CLEARLY a passer who happens to be mobile. Braxton Miller is a runner who is playing quarterback, big difference. Same with Cam Newton, Tebow. They were both 2nd in QB rating in their Heisman years, both completing 66% of their pass attempts (and Tebow did that as a sophmore). Here we are in Miller's senior year and we're still saying "Ok, this is the year where he becomes a complete QB". It's most likely not gonna happen. The other issue is tOSU doesn't have the top to bottom roster talent to mitigate Miller's deficiencies as a passer (when talking about winning a national title) the way Alabama can with mediocre QBs like McElroy and McCarron.

So that's why some of us are already looking past Miller, looking to Barrett and hoping he's "The Guy", the guy who is a passer who HAPPENS to mobile. I thought that of him when he committed, we'll see if we're wrong.

And you know THIS....man!

+2 HS
AJBor41's picture

I see where you're going with that, but in Braxton's defense, this past season he completed 63.5% of his passes and was top 15 in QB Rating. To reach your elusive 66%, he only needed 6 more completions tacked on to his 162. If he plays against FAMU or Cal, I think he's there easily in %. I don't think he's reached his potential, by any stretch of the imagination, so I disagree with your "It's most likely not gonna happen" thought.

All that said, I wouldn't be opposed to a pass-first offense, if that's where our talent and coaching leads us.

+4 HS
CuseGirl's picture

Dude, Braxton is not nearly the passer Jameis is. Braxton NEEDS the read option to open passing lanes for him. He also has to run when he doesn't see the open receivers, thats why his usage rate is so high. Also, the amount of throws to the flats? So not only does he run too much but his downfield ability is limited.

I wish Braxton the best, I do because I want to see tOSU win a natty but I'm not holding my breath. Hopefully Barrett or the Collier project pay off in the future

And you know THIS....man!

AJBor41's picture

I wasn't arguing that Miller is a better passer than Winston. I suppose if you're holding him up to Winston alone, then he may not be "the guy". However, I think he has made obvious improvements in his passing, and certainly has the talent to get us to the big prize. On top of that, it could easily be argued that Winston has also had superior WR talent, compared to Miller. Hopefully we see a change beginning in that regard this year, but if you recall last season against MSU, our WRs could barely get off the line of scrimmage.

What Would Troy Smith Do's picture

You keep getting downvoted but I agree with your first part.  Having someone who can pass and you can trust on passing downs would be nice.  I don't care if we are an Auburn offense and run for 400 yds/gm as long as when we need to pass we can do so successfully.  Just look at Braxton's passing stats against tough defenses.  They aren't good and he is consistently UNDER 50% completion.  I love the kid and his jersey his worn by both of my kids but I don't have confidence in passing situations.

I remember when we got him he was sold as a Pryor but throws more like Smith.  He may throw a better looking ball but his touch still isn't there.  Just look at all the slant patterns that stop the receiver or are thrown too hard and behind the receiver instead of in stride.  It still happens too much.

I am rooting like hell for him. I hope he stays in the pocket and looks through his options and makes the correct throw.  That he only runs if he has too and that we can absolutely air it out.  We should have the weapons to do so.

I don't expect to see Germaine out there (I think he's OSU's best pure passer ever) but look at the 3 wins that Smith had against TTUN.  The difference between 04 and 06 is staggering (with 05 being a nice mixture).  His confidence in the pocket and his accuracy were just so improved and I felt completely comfortable that whatever Smith was asked to do he could and would do.

For the record, I still want Gibson.  I'd prefer he be talked into being a receiver.  However, if he does come and receiver is the best option I'd still expect the staff to look at his atlhleticism and say "we have to put the ball in this kids hands every snap" and then put him at QB.  We'd win a ton of games, just not sure we'd get over the hump....

To be fair, during Smith's run he had WRs like Holmes, Ginn, Gonzo, and Robiskie. The best WR Braxton has had since Urban has gotten here was Philly.

There were also people who said the same thing about Justin Zwick over Troy Smith...

Let's wait and see how everything plays out first. No one is saying that Gibson's committing or permanently a QB, or that Burrow would be that offended if it happens, or that Gibson automatically beats our Burrow. All we know is that this kid is an elite prospect and overall athlete that would improve any team that adds him, and increase their chances of winning a national title.

A lot of people were curious to see what Terrelle Pryor could have done in UFM's offense.  If we land Gibson, this is the closest we are going to get too finding out.  I think the ceiling is that high, especially considering Gibson has an advantage Pryor never did: a real quarterback coach.

+5 HS
buckeyedude's picture

What about JT Barrett? He's definitely a dual threat QB, and possibly the starter for OSU next year. He doesnt have the height that Pryor did, but neither did Troy Smith, and he won a Heisman.

saltybuck61's picture

I don't think that he is doubting JT's ability. I think he is just stating that TG is a lot like TP. JT might be excellent, but he does not play like Pryor does. Gibson plays similar to Pryor, and people want to see how Pryor would do in Urban Meyer's system. Therefore, it is in the best interest of those folks to get a commitment from Torrance Gibson.

I'm so sick of this "I want a pass first QB. I'm so sick of running QB's nonsense". Torrance Gibson is a freak and I want him on my team regardless of how he can throw. I realize people want to see Payton Manning clones out on the field but the fact is Urban isn't recruiting those kinda guys for his type of offense and I'm fine with it. Passing mechanics can be improved over time, natural speed can't be taught. Let him come in and play himself into a WR if he's that bad but I for damn sure want to find out.

+14 HS

Passing mechanics can be improved over time, natural speed can't be taught.

I think both can improve over time with training, probably by about the same amount.  I don't think people are pissed that we have a QB that can run, just that the passing seems to be spotty.  I would be willing to trade a few spectacular runs a year for a lot more passing completions, even though I love Braxton's runs.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I don't think anyone wants a Peyton Manning clone in this offense. I personally would just like to see a more even distribution to the many weapons OSU now has & fewer QB runs in general. I love a guy who can run when needed. I also LOVE Braxton's ability but I'd fine fine if in the future the Ohio State QB spent a little more time in the pocket regardless of how athletic he is.

I personally want to see points for the good guys and less points for the bad guys.  The first part is going just fine with the Braxton/Herman partnership.  If you trade those spectacular runs you likely are trading less points for the illusion of a "balanced" offense.

I doubt you would lose points by balancing the offense, in fact I suspect there would be more. But I can't prove it anymore than you can prove your theory so I'll stop there.

What I do know to be fact is that you do risk injury every time one of those spectacular runs happens. Injury to the QB that can't be afforded this upcoming season in particular. I just said I love Braxton btw, so please don't try to take my opinion as my saying I don't think he's great. He's my favorite current college football player. I don't care if it were Joe Burrow, Barrett, Cardale, Collier or Gibson. It's my preference that the next QB, or even Braxton this year, let more of the players around them do more work.

And if he is peeking in here, you will win a LOT more games at OSU than at Tennessee or Auburn, so research done, commit to the Buckeyes and enjoy a stress-free senior year!

I don't think you can dismiss Auburn that quickly.  They may lose less games, but they also play a much tougher schedule.  They won a national championship 4 years ago and were in the title game last year...they have a strong argument that they give the best chance of winning, though I think our path to the playoffs and coach should tip the odds in our favor.  Gus did lead them to a national championship game in his first year.  They will be a strong team going forward.

Tennessee is a dumpster fire though.
