Safety Tyler Green Commits to Ohio State

By John Brandon on June 8, 2014 at 5:54p
Safety Tyler Green committed to Ohio State today, becoming the fourth member of OSU's 2015 class.

Well, that escalated quickly. As originally reported by our own Jordan Wagner, Tyler Green has committed to Ohio State today after receiving an offer at today's camp.

“I was nervous,” he said about speaking with Urban Meyer after camp. “I was smiling after I came out.” The reason for the smile? The four-star safety had committed to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

“I was 100% ready to go, [Ohio State] was the one I was waiting for.”

Green joins a Buckeye recruiting class that has suddenly begun gaining momentum with two commits in just over two weeks. The Maryland speedster projects as a safety at Ohio State, picking the Buckeyes over offers from Virginia, N.C. State, Maryland and others.

THE Green File

  • Size: 6-3/195
  • Position: S
  • Class: 2015
  • School: DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD)
  • 247 Composite Rating: ★★★
  • 247 Composite Rank: 18th (Safety)

Green came to Columbus this weekend on a mission to earn an offer from Ohio State, the one he knew he wanted, and didn't hesitate once that offer came. He had previously said that if Ohio State offered him he would be a Buckeye, and that proved to be true.

"I knew I wanted to be an Ohio State Buckeye," the newest commitment said. "I was ready to go. I've been thinking about Ohio State back while the season was going on."

"It feels great," he said of being a Buckeye. "The fan base, the coaches, the love, it feels great."

Green hopes to represent Ohio State well later this summer at "The Opening" in Oregon, an event that helped elevate last year's class to "The Dream 14." He will be a great leader in this class, there's no doubt about it.

While Green has only been committed for a matter of minutes, he is already looking forward to helping the Buckeyes on the recruiting trail. "Ohio State is low on commitments right now, so I am definitely planning to get some guys from the DMV area."

Urban Meyer called on the four-star prospect to help the Buckeyes recruiting class. "Coach Meyer told me he needed me to help get us some commits. As soon as I get home, I'm trying to pull some guys in."

Green later confirmed his commitment on Twitter:

An impressive 4.41 forty yard dash and a "sky-high" vertical contributed to the Buckeyes extending an offer, according to Green.

Stay tuned for more coverage from the Eleven Warriors Recruiting Team as this story develops.

Not sure how I feel about Urb allowing him to commit right away. Thought he'd see where things stand with some higher rated DBs.

i don't want to sound like a negative Nancy, I really like the fact that Green is a tall DB, but I just hope this doesn't turn out to be a reach

-11 HS
Optimistic Buckeye Pessimist's picture

I don't think it's a reach in this case. I watched his highlight video. He played CB in high school but he's clearly a safety as evidenced by his nose for the ball and quick recognition and trigger in run support. Also from his video, he loves to hit. So take his instincts and his physicality and pair them with a 6'3" frame and 4.41 speed and you've got a serious football player.

Edit: please stop with down voting the above post by weimer. It's a valid comment that isn't an attempt at trolling. That's a perfect example of misuse of the voting system. Even if you disagree with what he says, he's attempting to bring a different point of view for discussion here. That sort of thing should be ENCOURAGED.

Jordan Wagner's picture

Great kid. Spoke with him on a few occasions. In conversations with me, he made it clear he wanted an Ohio State offer. He will definitely be trying to recruit guys to Ohio State.

He ran a 4.41 forty today. Very impressive for his size.

Brutus' Left Nut's picture

Are the 40 times at these camps laser timed or hand timed?  I know the Opening is laser, but wasn't sure about OSU ones.

Jordan Wagner's picture

Hand timed. They run twice and usually have two guys taking down times.

JohnnyKozmo's picture

I've said it before a few times now-Urban is building a Seattle-like secondary.  Big DBs over 6'2" who can move and beat up WRs.  He spent time with Pete Carroll.  It's a copycat game, just like the spread and read option has slowly made it's way to the NFL, Seattles D is a blueprint to use to stop high powered offenses.

What I love about this most about this pickup is the fact Green is built to defend those big WRs that did so well this past bowl season (Watkins, etc.). Urbz knows what he's doing :)
