GIF: Sam Thompson's Tournament Dunk of the Day

By Jason Priestas on March 14, 2014 at 5:05p

With the score tied at 20 in the first half of a Big Ten tournament quarterfinal game against Nebraska, Aaron Craft finds Sam Thompson cutting on the baseline, which, naturally, leads to another slam-and-one play from Thompson.

Cornhusker coach Tim Miles saw it coming, as he frantically tried to get the attention of forward (and soon-to-be-victim) Walter Pitchford. As did that dude gunning for a trillion at the end of the bench.

Didn't matter.

Thompson would make the free throw to give Ohio State a 23-20 lead, but that quickly evaporated, thanks to a 37-10 Nebraska run to build an 18-point lead for the Huskers. Then the real magic happened.

These Buckeyes are the college version of that New York Knicks team from 20 years ago led by Pat Ewing and Charles Oakley. They are very athletic and expend a tremendous amount of energy on the defensive side of the floor. That expended energy turns into a flat offense...luckily, the Buckeyes have the athleticism to keep other defenses honest as we see by incredible dunks by guys with a lot of UPS. It makes for a more boring brand of basketball, but it can win games and make other offenses look inept at times.

Well, here's to the Buckeyes and their will...they didn't quit, played as a team and showed (I think) that they are dangerous enough to beat anyone. Just because there doesn't SEEM to be any elite Big Ten teams, doesn't mean they do not exist. The truth is probably that the Big Ten has more elite teams than any other conference (I hate saying that as it sounds like those awful SEC football fans when they try to explain why SEC football teams can't go unbeaten). Oh well....Two down and M*ch*gan is next. Go Buckeyes...Great comeback!!! Great dunk AGAIN, Sam Thompson!!!

"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.

Someone said it yesterday, but I want to echo their sentiment: We should run that play 5-10s a game! Or at least, keep running it until the D adjusts. But if they ran it only occasionally, once every 4 or 5 mins, it would be there for the taking every time!

This team just doesn't know how to play with a lead. They lose their intensity, focus, whatever, but they just don't play with that "killer instinct". They expect things to happen when they have the lead instead of making things happen.

Absolute amazing and so much going on in that top gif lol. One thing I'll state and I've noticed two games in a row... That's close to a crotch grab on the dunk. Along with that and multiple times when adv and other players back talk the refs could easily lead to a technical and free points for the opponents. Playing with a lot of heart just have to be careful.

Great observation.  Tirico and Dan D commented on whether Sam T was talking after the dunk and if it was good sportsmanship?

Sometimes you just have to laugh.

As nice as this was, I think his alley-oop to take the lead over TTUN was better...
