Larry Johnson has made an impact addition for the 2025 Ohio State roster.
Former North Carolina standout Beau Atkinson, one of the top defensive ends available in the spring transfer portal, committed to Ohio State on Wednesday.
The Atkinson File
- Year: Redshirt Junior
- Size: 6-6/265
- Pos: DE
- Previous School: North Carolina (2022-24)
- 2024 Stats: 35 tackles, 7.5 sacks
Atkinson visited Columbus on Monday and chose Ohio State over Georgia and South Carolina, who also actively pursued Atkinson once he was available on the portal market. He'll have two seasons of eligibility remaining to use with the Buckeyes. He's the first commit OSU has added in the spring transfer portal window.
The 6-foot-6, 265-pound playmaker made his living on the edge at North Carolina, and it's likely where he'll play at Ohio State. However, his size could allow him to shift inside if needed, should Johnson deem that an appropriate fit. As it stands, Atkinson will compete with Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson Jr. for a starting role, but at worst, he should crack the two-deep at defensive end given his proven college production.
Atkinson joins a defensive end unit that will also include converted linebacker C.J. Hicks, Idaho State transfer Logan George and highly touted freshman Zion Grady, among others, for the 2025 season.
A four-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, Atkinson had a productive career with the North Carolina Tar Heels, recording 54 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and one forced fumble across the last two seasons after redshirting in 2022.
Last year, he notched 35 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Per Pro Football Focus’ grades, Atkinson recorded an overall grade of 77 in 2024, which is considered above average. He graded 74.3 in run defense and scored 76.2 in pass rushing over 381 defensive snaps a year ago.
Atkinson marks an important addition for the Buckeyes' defensive line room, but OSU likely wants more additions on the interior. Former Georgia Southern defensive tackle Troy Pikes is scheduled to visit OSU on Friday. Another defensive tackle target, Maraad Watson, signed with Texas on Tuesday.
