BACKGROUND

1936 was the third season for Francis Schmidt as Ohio State's head coach. Schmidt led the Buckeyes to 7-1 records in 1934 and 1935. His teams defeated That Team by a combined score 72-0 in his first two seasons. The Buckeyes entered the game against Indiana with a disappointing 1-2 record and were in danger of the season going totally off the rails.

Ohio State opened the season with a 60-0 blowout victory over New York University. The Buckeyes then lost the next two games and entered the tilt against Indiana with a two-game losing streak. The Hoosiers were 2-1 and defeated That Team 14-3 in the second week of the season.

OHIO STATE PLAYERS
  • Tippy Dye threw the game winning touchdown pass.
  • Merle Wendt caught the 15-yard touchdown pass.

KEY PLAY OF THE GAME
From The Official Ohio State Football Encyclopedia:

By adding some "old plays" to the offense, Schmidt's razzle-dazzle element of deception was replaced by perfect execution of some old traditional plays--especially the off-tackle smash, the end run and the simplified forward pass.

Using straight-ahead power football, Ohio State marched 60 yards in 10 plays for the game's only touchdown, midway through the second quarter. Behind perfect protection, Tippy Dye passed the final 15 yards to Merle Wendt, who cut in from the sideline and caught the ball almost directly in front of the goal post for the score.

THE REST OF THE STORY

The next week Ohio State traveled to Notre Dame and lost 2-7 in a monsoon. The Buckeyes would finish the season winning the last three games. That included defeating That Team 21-0 in the last game of 1936. With the win Schmidt's Buckeyes had kept That Team scoreless for the three consecutive seasons and outscored them 93-0.
