Navy's athletic department released the "Summer White-inspired" jerseys the Midshipmen will wear in their clash against Ohio State, and I must say, I am quite a fan.

Clean

From NavySports.com:

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Navy football team will open the 2014 season against Ohio State on Saturday in a special Under Armour-designed uniform inspired by the iconic Navy Summer Whites military uniform.

From a helmet directly inspired by the covers that the Mids wear to a gold belt buckle, no detail was left out. Additionally, the Mids will be wearing solid white cleats that represent the all-white dress shoes of the Summer Whites military uniform, as well as all-white gloves.

For the first time, uniforms will slightly vary from player to player, with each athlete wearing their specific rank on the field, depicted in the shoulder board and pant leg design of each uniform.

Despite the Midshipmen trying their damndest to destroy our Buckeyes' hopes and dreams... these uniforms (especially with the rank variation) are pretty damn slick.

Hard not to like these-man those will be neat to see.  Hopefully they have a hat for sale at the stadium that is in line with the design of the Uniforms.

On a side note, I think everyone needs to root for Maryland and hope they can be a successful Football program.  We have all seen what Nike has done with Oregon.  If Maryland can start to field a respectable team, and with Under Armours unlimited resources ($285 million offer to Kevin Durant!!!), they could turn into a real force in the B1G East division.  They are already situated in a fertile recruiting area, and on-field success would lead to them keeping more of those elite prospects home.  That would only help the B1G as a whole.

So if a Lineman who has rank over the QB misses a block, is the QB allowed to yell at the Lineman?

+4 HS
I_Run_The_Dave's picture

Situations like that get sketchy.  Technically, probably yes, but after the game, he may regret it.

In the army, there were times when I, as a specialist, was placed in charge of NCOs because I was conducting training in my area of expertise.  They were required to submit to my authority during the training because the first sergeant, who outranks them, placed them under my authority.  Now, how I use that authority is up to me, and if they smoke the sh*t out of me after the training is over because of it, that's on me.

If you are the Navy QB you need to take charge of your offense, but tread lightly.

JoeAndSo's picture

I know I'm missing the point and I'm also not saying they shouldn't be wearing these.  But for educational purposes isn't there some sort of rule that says home teams are NOT allowed to wear their white jersey's? If I remember right Pete Carroll, when he was still with USC, got in trouble because he insisted on having USC wear their home jersey's on the road at UCLA.

"¯\_(ツ)_/¯"  - Joey Bosa

JohnnyKozmo's picture

No rule against it I don't believe.  That USC/UCLA situation was because both teams wore their home jerseys, because they thought (and I agreed) it looked cooler to see the UCLA powder blue with the USC Maroon and Gold in the Rose Bowl at the same time.

I think they were assessed a 15yd penalty, but I believe UCLA did something during a play to give them back the yardage.

+1 HS
kb1's picture

I don't recall a penalty being accessed for both teams wearing their darks (home) jerseys. I thought it was just agreed to sign center they were contrasting colors. I always thought it be cool if Ohio State and ttun did that for The Game. Especially if they could play in B1G title game.

+1 HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

I had to look it up.  Per Wikipedia:

Starting in 2006, the coaches at the time, USC coach Pete Carroll and UCLA coach Karl Dorrell expressed an interest in restarting the tradition of both teams wearing home jerseys. At the time, the NCAA football rules Article 3. a. stated, "Players of opposing teams shall wear jerseys of contrasting colors, and the visiting team shall wear white jerseys."[21] USC coach Pete Carroll said he would be willing to lose two timeouts during the game so that the USC team could wear their red jerseys for the UCLA-USC football game on December 6, 2008.[22] It was determined before the 2008 game that the visiting school would only lose one timeout for incorrect equipment. Carroll agreed to forfeit a timeout to satisfy the ruling and Coach Rick Neuheisel agreed to forfeit one, in return (even though, as the coach of the home team, he was not required to do so by the ruling) to get back this tradition, and it was renewed in the 2008 game.[23] In the wake of the coaches' decisions, the NCAA decided to amend their rules regarding away teams' uniforms (which were originally put into place to provide more contrast for black-and-white photography and television broadcasts), changing the rule to state that the teams must agree on the decision for both teams to wear their colored jerseys before the game and that the uniforms must be of easily contrasted colors.[24] Since the home team is already required to wear its colored home jerseys and would not be in violation of any equipment rules, this essentially leaves the decision up to them as to whether or not to allow the visiting team is to wear their home uniforms.

+5 HS
Frimmel's picture

I think the home team gets first choice. The visitors must then wear a color not the same. (Nebraska and Wiscy can't both wear their red jerseys) I don't think there is a rule that says the visitors have to wear white. But IANAR (I am not a ref.)

Frimmel's picture

Okay, so I looked it up: http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/rules/fielddiagrams/football.pdf (page 15)

The visiting team wears white unless arrangements are made prior to the season. Visiting teams can wear colored jerseys if prior arrangements have been made or they'll get an unsportsmanlike penalty at the start of each half.

mtrotb's picture

This is how LSU wears white at home since it is their choice.  And consequently they then wear white away since everyone except LSU wears color at home.  I remember one game like 15 years ago someone in the SEC wanted to mess with them and chose to wear white at home to force LSU to wear purple.  It was either Florida or Miss St.

Awesome look for Navy! Always love the all-white! Under Armour has come a long way with their design team. Much better than Adidas, but I always need a swoosh on my gear.

On a side note, I am taking my wife and my 5 year old son to their 1st Buckeye game on Saturday and I have him wearing the scarlet Braxton # 5, to represent. ( He was so excited to see XBrax and wear the jersey, but I did tell him to also look for Raekwon on the field.)

Anyway, I thought that we were going to be in white and on the visitor's side of M & T. Does anyone know which sideline we will have for Saturday?  I got the family 1st row on the visitor's sideline near the endzone in section 107, to be close to the action and I thought it would be our side. I was also told the Buckeyes enter the field under section 109. Anyone have the info on this yet?

They do look great, especially the class rank (not rank such as Midshipmen Capt, Lt, etc).  I wonder if Marine options will have an EGA on the unis?

As a side note, they look like what we used to call Trop White Short rather than Trop White Long since the former had short pants and the later had long ones.

Psyched for the game as I'll be there.

They do not know their branch/specialty yet. They will choose later in the year, so unlike NROTC there is no "Marine Option." They have a pre-req program, but none will be Marines until the senior class chooses their paths later this year.

A Few Good Men was one of my favorite films for years, and I actually played Col. Nathan R. Jessup (Nicholson's character) in the OSU campus performance of the play during my time as a plucky young undergrad.

BUT, the older I get, the more I see Aaron Sorkin's trademark political agenda in the work, specifically his anti-military bent. Without getting into Rs & Ds type stuff, I'll just say that you can tell that Sorkin is no fan of the USMC based on how he wrote Cols. Jessup and Markinson, and especially how he wrote Lt. Jonathan James Kendrick (played by the always excellent Keifer Sutherland).
