Update (4:01 PM):

First there was this story from Dan Murphy of Notre Dame's 24/7 site:

A foursome of Notre Dame veterans was not seen leaving the Irish practice field Friday afternoon. Cornerback KeiVarae Russell, defensive end Ishaq Williams, linebacker Kendall Moore and wide receiver DaVaris Daniels were not among the players who exited the LaBar Practice Field Friday.

Then Pat Forde logged into Twitter dot com and dropped this bomb on us:

And then followed it up with this story:

The situation was described to Yahoo Sports as a potential “honor code violation,” which could result in the ineligibility of the players. Under NCAA protocol, if any fraud that occurred impacted players’ eligibility, the school could ultimately vacate victories. Both Daniels and Russell were significant players during Notre Dame’s 2012 season, when the Irish went 12-0 before losing to Alabama in the BCS Championship Game.

Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson missed last season because of an academic issue that was reportedly an honor code violation. This is believed to be a separate situation.

Honor codes... they get ya every time

Based on how past scandals have gone down, the best defense against the NCAA seems to be "Fuck you. Prove it."

Schools that comply and work with the NCAA by divulging information seem to get hammered while those that stonewall the NCAA and stay united seem to get off lightly because the NCAA compliance department is too under-staffed to perform thorough investigations.

Yep. Not to mention that ND hasn't exactly been super above-board with how they've handled serious misdeeds on their campus... Rape, more or less killing the videographer during the windy practice debacle, etc. Not a good look for a religious institution, especially.

Given that they are not in one of the P5 conferences (for football, anyway), I wonder if they feel like they don't have a shot at beating the NCAA going the denial route.

On the other hand, that strategy backfired pretty badly for USC.  It seems like more of a crapshoot than anything else.

Yep. Bingo. Simply compare tOSU and tattoos to Auburn and ... where to begin?  I am pretty sure "F*ck you. Prove it." Has replaced, "War Eagle" down there.

I despise Notre Dame and their holier than thou fans. They are getting what they deserve.

If they did it and get hammered for it, then ya, they deserved it. I don't see how that has anything to do with the fan base though.

I agree with Patriot.  The fun of sports is hating on other teams.  But when stupid people do stupid things, and it ends up screwing things up, that's not something fans deserve.

penn state fans suck, but they don't deserve sanctions on their team due to a piece of scum pedophile.

When OSU was going through tatgate all I ever heard from the ND fans that I know, is how they have a higher standard to live up to compared to other college sports programs, and how they do things the right way. B to the S is what I say, they cheat just like the rest of the college sports world. Maybe I shouldn't take so much joy in their fan's misery on account of acquiring some bad ju ju but I can't help it.

Wow. Talk about a swift kick in the butt if you're an ND fan or player or whatever

You can feed a bobcat all the chili it wants. That don't mean it's going to crap out diamonds.

Per CBS Sports:

According to the statement, "evidence that students had submitted papers and homework that had been written for them by others" was supplied to the Notre Dame athletics compliance office in late July.

One of my dudes at work is a big ND fan. Of course, when he heard the news he started popping off about those four starters booted off the team would be Dean's list at OSU. I had to correct him noting, if those four dudes were at OSU, they wouldn't be starters.

I wonder if Brian Kelly survives this, and if not do they bring back Weis since he is still on the payroll?

Still on the payroll are you serious Habu?

Even if I was a ND fan - I wouldn't dress in that garb - no way.

Serious as a *ichigan ticket off Groupon Seattle. Not only is Weis on the ND payroll through December 2015, he made more than Kelly in 2012. Let me say that differently. In 2012 (according to ND Tax Records) ND paid Brian Kelly 1.5 mil. That same year ND paid Weis 2.1 mil. That's both sickening and hilarious at the same time.

Absolutely awesome HABU - one of my best friends back in C-town is a huge ND fan. I guess he'll be getting an earful next time we chat. I understand we are the most hated fan base in college football but ND fan base has to be right up there as well.

Habu71,

How are you privy to Notre Dames tax records? 1) they are private institution and do not have public records and 2) as a Religious organization what taxes are the paying?

Notre Dame paid football coach Brian Kelly more than $600,000 in bonuses during the 2012 calendar year, according to the university's new federal tax return, which for the first time also listed a Fighting Irish football assistant coach from that year as one of the school's highest-paid employees.

Former football head coach Charlie Weis continues to receive more money from the school than any current athletics employee. Weis received nearly $2.1 million in 2012 as part of an ongoing separation agreement that, according to the return, includes additional annual payments through December 2015.

...

The only person with more compensation from Notre Dame than Weis in 2012 was vice president and chief investment officer Scott Malpass, who was credited with a total of nearly $4.3 million.

As a private school, Notre Dame is not required to make public its employment contracts.

Kelly had nearly $1.5 million in total pay from the school for 2012, according to the new return, which the university provided in response to a request from USA TODAY Sports. But the document notes that Kelly "is permitted to receive compensation from external sources with prior written approval from the University" and any such income is not reported on the return. Kelly's base compensation was reported as $698,140 – a little more than $25,000 more than the amount reported for calendar 2011.

I guess they should have joined one of the Power 5, this would all go away. Just ask North Carolina.

So they'd have to vacate a 37-15 record, a national championship game shellacking, and a fake girlfriend?  Has anyone looked into whether this academic fraud is an intentional ploy?
