Ohio State To Unveil Bronze Woody Hayes Statue
Zanesville artist Alan Cottrill said he hopes he captured the key traits of the famed Ohio State University Buckeyes coach.
“One word – intensity,” Cottrill said. “Woody’s intensity, his will to win, his single-mindedness of purpose.”
For Cottrill, the task of creating the statue proved simple.
“Those alive when he coached, I want them to smile and remember what he was like – the winning attitude, the intensity,” Cottrill said.
In a perfect world, the statue would be 100 feet tall. Also, it would breath fire.

SWEET!

No matter how sh*tty the tour is, it's always tough to leave.
Awesome! Intensity is the perfect word.
Two of Woody's themes were "Pay Forward" and "You Win With People". Would be great to incorporate. Great to see we are honoring the man that cemented a legacy for all of us.
Perfect, that would be awesome. Glad you brought that up.
"Pay Forward" was on the inscription. Can I get a +1?
"It don't mean butt if it ain't got that jutt!"
I met him in April of 1974. He signed my copy of "You Win With People" and addressed it - to me.
I'm happy for him and his family. Woody Hayes was a good and great man.
Shame the general public doesn't know all he did. Children's hospital, had players stay with him til grades were up, etc. Don't you get tired of hearing from your OSU ignorant friends about how he "punched that Clemson guy"?
i love it! BUT ,i think it should be at the Shoe
kvn
Agree - would have loved to see this placed at the shoe, right in the middle of the sidewalk between the Jesse Owens monument and near the rotunda North entrance. Would be cool to see the band go past it on both sides as they start to go in the stadium.....
Too young to have known him, but hearing from my family and reading the history has shown me that Woody was a great Ohioan, much more to him beyond the field.
Fitting tribute to the man and coach.

I thought he told this story in his first speech after bing hired to the Ohio high school coaches. But in that speech he said earle did it... Maybe I am misremembering?

Earle, Woody, no difference - it's a joke he uses to warm up the crowd...I doubt highly there is any truth at all to it...At least I hope not anyway...

I don't care how tough you are, a snapping turtle hanging on to little Jimmy would cause anyone to tear up!

Very glad to see this tribute on Woody's 100th birthday. I have only vague memories of him on the field, but I was aware enough to know what a legend he was.
It is nice to see this done well.
Nope Nope Nope. I'm going to paraphrase Spencer Hall here...statues are for dictators and dogs who saves towns from floods.
Do. Not. Want.

Congratulations Coach Hayes, and Happy Birthday. I can't wait to see this statue in person.
wish they put it under the rotunda at the Shoe
they're saving that spot for the Urban statue in 20 years.
Very deserving and will be appreciated by most.
Yes they should put it under the rotunda!! It would be sweet seeing TBDBITL running by Woody once they've marched over from Skull Session

At first I thought that the statue was going to be outside Ohio Stadium, and I was very against the idea. Over at the WHAC, a statue of Woody makes sense (if a statue of Woody is erected anywhere). The stadium is, in its current setup, an arena for team sports -- not an arena for individuals.
If they ever put a statue of an individual outside of Ohio Stadium, it should be of the greatest individual who ever competed there. That person isn't Woody. It's Jesse Owens.
Taquitos.
They should replace Buckeye Grove with a "Terracotta Army" of busts of Buckeye All Americans.

Woody's statue should be giving the "go for two" sign.
...Only because he couldn't go for three.
