SINCE we haven't had any more real evidence, just gonna continue theorizing down the "closet" theory path here:
ND is a catholic school, the Church is famously homophobic (this is a fact not a political statement. whether you think this is a good or bad thing is up to you not here to argue that).
ND finds out about Manti's beard/fake online gf stuff, and agrees to support him publically with the full weight of the AD behind him, IF he follows their narrative and claims he was 'scammed', since THE Catholic flagship school of America can't have its most visible representative coming out against church doctrine. Note: This could've happened at any point in the last season, not just since Dec 26 or w/e. They very well could've found out earlier and told him to keep up the public image for Heisman purposes, and said they'd have his back with the "scammed" excuse/backstory if it ever became public.
It became public yesterday, the pre-planned ND PR spin goes into full effect pushing the "naive kid got tricked" narrative.
Manti and his family go along with it until today, but now there's been a break(?), and he's canceling this planned ESPN PR interview that ND wanted him to do bc he's about to come clean.
Hey, its far fetched but possible. Everything in this story has been, "Far-fetched".

Stephen A. Smith absolutely obliterated Manti Te'o this morning on first take. I'm not crazy about the show but he rips him and his defenders to pieces.
