Byron Mullens Puts OSU on Blast

"To tell you the truth, if I could go back, I would've transferred out of Ohio state and went to Ohio U. The coach that I committed to left OSU and became the head coach at OU. I truly believe if I had done that, I would've stayed in school for another year or so, but that's not what happened." (Trade Street Post)

Maybe if he went and played in the MAC he would've scored more points, gotten more rebounds and more blocks...

If I envision a world were BJ Mullens went to Ohio instead of tOSU...it looks pretty much like the one we're in.

Nothing too inflammatory.  His coach left, maybe he should have left, too.  Never was my favorite Buckeye.  He never really contributed much while he was there.

if he would have played at OU instead, how would we have replaced him in the starting lineup? oh yeah thats right HE NEVER STARTED.

i expect nothing less from a kid who grew up in a trailer park.

WTF? Glad you didn't have to fight through poverty because it allows you to make brilliant comments like this.

BucksfanXC's picture

Dude...I didn't like his comment either, but that was uncalled for and irrelevant.

mastermiind's picture

On the contrary, it epitomizes relevance. The kid grew up in a p.o.s. family. That is why he is a p.o.s. himself. People who come from that background have a greater sense of entitlement than anybody else. Why? Because the government supported them their whole lives. You may not like the politics behind this statement, but I would say you're ignorant if you don't see the truth in it.

I'm not saying I disagree with you, but I'd stop this discussion before the banhammer drops...

His mother even had to beg for money on the side of the road to put food on the table. He should have stayed in college, but the idea of making a million dollars was too great to pass up. I am glad he had the talent to make it in the pros and I would never bash the young man for staying only one year. I can't imagine living in poverty.

btalbert25's picture

I couldn't imagine it either!  Seems like people always have an opinion about the impoverished, but few have actually had to live in poverty.  I'll never fault someone for leaving after one year, because I don't know their situation and I certainly don't know the person, so who I can't say that the guy or his family or P.O.S.

onetwentyeight's picture

I love how you have such in-depth personal insight as to the character of this guy's family. Who I'm sure you've met multiple times over the years and know intimately.

Seriously, fuck off.

mastermiind's picture

i've met the kid. he's a p.o.s. i've now seen you post once on 11w, and i can see from this that you also are a p.o.s. "#$%$ off?" what are you, british?

Yes, I apologize for taking offense that someone would say garbage like this -->  "People who come from that background have a greater sense of entitlement than anybody else" on a SPORTS blog.

There are people from "that background" who work their asses off and put themselves and their kids through college and contribute to society. WHo are you to generalize ALL poor people as lazy and entitled?

Even if you think Mullens is a POS (who happened to come from a poor background) there was no need to take a shot at /ALL POOR PEOPLE/ ... on a freaking OSU Sports blog. I don't even know why I'm responding to someone with such an obvious lack of self-awareness.

He wasn't staying longer than a year no matter where he went. Who does he think he's kidding?

Buckeye Chuck's picture

I agree with that, but I'd sooner believe he would have stayed ay any college for 2 years than I'd buy him transferring from Ohio State to Ohio out of pique. Aside from players who choose to leave for playing time (like current Bobcat Walter Offutt) or are kicked out for grades or discipline reasons, no one leaves a March Madness-level Big Ten program for a middling MAC-level program.

Apparently the close personal relationship he's developed with various NBA benches these last few seasons hasn't humbled him any.

Makes me wonder whatever happened to Gary Trent.

BucksfanXC's picture

Maybe if he went to Ohio he wouldn't have been drafted so high and would have had to stay another few years or so, or at least until he actually learned how to play basketball. Dude, you better count your blessings that you had the privilege of attending THE Ohio State University.

I have no hard feelings towards Byron, but I do know from day one he stood up in class during "ice breakers" and said (quote): "Hi I'm Byron and I'm going to the league". This kid had 1 and done on his mind from day one and I also know for a fact he didn't listen to a word Thad Matta had to say in regards to advice. Thad told Mike Conley he should go so don't think he's one of those coaches who will hold you back just to benefit himself. Thad knew one more year and BJ would be an absolute STUD at OSU if he bought in. BJ never bought in and that is why all he tried to do when he got in was tally up the points so he could beef up his NBA resume. I'm glad he has matured as a player but he obviously hasn't matured as a person. All he had to say was I did what was best for my family in our situation and I don't regret that decision.

RBuck's picture

I too have no hard feelings for Mullins. His family was dirt poor...the kid did what he had to do.

How about 11w makes a headline about the article instead of cherry picking one little comment that makes him sound like a prick to buckeye fans.
the real story is 12.4 pts 5.6rebs a game in 23mins a game. Keep it up bj.

Alex's picture

Yes, but at the same time, he BLASTED OSU pretty much....anyone can read the article for themselves and I think we have shone the light on his success this year a few times...

Quite frankly I don't car ehow he does in the NBA...knowing what I know, and I know it's hard for you all to feel the same way because you don't know what I know, I don't root for this guy or look at him in the same light as I do former Buckeyes

Personally, I think the guy is a bit of a douche. Mainly, though, I wish he'd just move on from talking about Ohio State like we've moved on from him. Good luck in the league and keep supporting your family.

DJ Byrnes's picture

The true story here -- as noted above -- is Byron is averaging 12/5 in the NBA... which is about 15/6 more than I'd ever thought he'd average. The guy has turned himself into a very solid NBA rotational big & still has room for growth.

He said he committed to a coach rather than the program and would have been willing to transfer elsewhere to play for him him. Is this something to hate him for and take cheap, ignorant shots at somebody over the internet?

(Not that I'm above cheap, ignorant shots on the internet... but I think there are roughly 50,000,000 better targets than this kid.)

I went to High school with BJ, to me i never cared for him...he never even listen to our bball coach...his teachers would have to pay special attention to him because he couldn't comprehend anything he was taught..BJ is just not bright..

to hear him say these things about OSU doesn't matter Anyways, im probably not the only one who forgets from time to time that he even attended OSU..

BUT ANYWAY, WHO CARES...HAHA

ShowThemOhiosHere's picture

Eh, whatever.  I thought just from a playing standpoint that he wasn't good enough to be a one-and-doner.  But given his family's financial situation, and given that he apparently wasn't committed to our program anyway, it probably was for the best for all parties involved.  He basically committed to an assistant then...does that even make sense?

Class of 2010.

First things first, Mastermind is an idiot.

I dont think BJ put anyone on blast. The coach that recruited him left, and he wanted out. Happens all the time.

Evan Turner and a few others mentioned repeatedly how much school pride he had.

I root for Byron the same as any other Buckeye in the NBA.
