James Franklin Expected to be Penn State's Next Coach

James Franklin

When Bill O'Brien finally pulled the ripcord on his NFL parachute, two names were reportedly at the top of Penn State's wish-list: Miami's Al Golden and Vanderbilt's James Franklin. After Golden announced he would not seek the job, it appears the Nittany Lions have finally got their man in James Franklin:

Franklin, who was born in Pennsylvania and is a former Maryland offensive coordinator, went 21-15 and 2-1 in bowl games during three seasons at Vanderbilt. Unfortunately for Franklin, however, the United States Postal Service will no longer be able to get him out of those pesky games against Ohio State and Northwestern.

UPDATE (2:08 PM): Vanderbilt defensive end Caleb Azubike claims no decision has been made:

He coaches with a lot of emotion, a lot of desire. He could be a very good hire.

BuckeyeChris's picture

He coaches on a boat. He coaches on a float. I wonder if he can coach near a moat?

Couldn't resist...that just sounded very Seussian to me.  Sorry, USMC. ;)

He coaches on a plane, he coaches on a train, sometimes he even coaches in the rain.

You know, honestly, I didn't even pay attention to the fact that that rhymed. You put a smile on face!Happy to be the butt of that one.

It was brilliance! Don't be so humble, USMC!

I've already heard several people here in Tennessee say "Why would he want to leave the SEC for the Big Ten?"

All too many fans in the south have no national perspective.  Why would you leave Vandy for the PSU?  Uhhhh....facilities, recruiting, tradition, money.  Would be an extremely easy decision if not for the JoePa/Sandusky fiasco.

Normal Buck's picture

I honestly recall thinking the exact opposite, when I heard that Saban was leaving Mich. State for LSU.

BME_Buckeye's picture

I wonder if the Joebots will run him off like BOB.

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

He was going to leave regardless.

"YOLO" = I'm about to do something extremely ignorant/stupid & I need an excuse to do it.

Run_Fido_Run's picture

Yeah, I'm skeptical about this, too. Presumably, the Joebots were worse when BOB first arrived at PSU than two years into his regime. Yet the problem came to head just about when he was looking to take a pro job?
It's possible that BOB's annoyance with the Joebots was a cumulative thing that gradually wore on him. It's also possible that he proposed some things in 2013 that got undermined by Joebots and that pissed him off, whereas he wasn't as aware of and/or pissed off about that factor in 2012, but the timing of BOB's complaints about the Joebots just seems too convenient.

Oyster's picture

That is going to be an issue at PSU for a very long time.  "Bama had the same thing when Bryant retired and ttun is still having that issue.  It will take a NC to shake the ghost of JoPa from that place, and until that happens everyone will be compared to him.

armybuckinva's picture

Not only is he a good coach, but he's one helluva recruiter.  He brought in some of the best recruiting classes in Vanderbilt history.   Very good hire IMO.

I like the ending jab. Very nice touch.

tennbuckeye19's picture

Apparently the OC from Bama who took the UM job wasn't exactly "poached". Rumor is that Saban wasn't happy with the team's offensive output and his OC saw the writing on the wall that he wasn't gonna be around much longer in Tuscaloosa.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

That sucks for Vandy. I liked watching them drive UT fans crazy.

The one thing I would be worried about if I were Penn State fans is he doesn't have a single great win on his resume. Vandy mostly beat mediocre teams.

tennbuckeye19's picture

This is true. But he did things that had never been done at Vanderbilt. For a Vandy team that hasn't had any success in program history (6 total bowl games), ANY win is considered great to them. And I am being serious when I say that. Beating bad Kentucky or Tennessee teams is as celebrated as if they would've beaten the top teams in the conference. Even though the teams were down, Vanderbilt had never beaten Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee in the same season until this year.

TNbuckeye91's picture

Yeah this sucks. i'm a big Vandy fan. I live in nashville. i really don't want him to go.

Chief B1G Dump's picture

This is the guy that said he looks at his assistants wives before making a hire...to see if theyre hot...that way he knows his coaches are ambitious and good recruiters.

It sounded crazy when it came out a few years ago but it made me a fan.

Dublin68's picture

Meyer...I am looking at you..you are next to hire a new Def Co

zachofaltrades's picture

Wasn't Franklin getting NFL looks this year?  Aren't they worried that they have another BOB situation on their hands?

armybuckinva's picture

Yes. Multiple looks. That would be a hard pill to swallow if he accepts then runs for the NFL in 2-3 seasons as well. I'm interested to see the contract details if this gets done today.

Ohio State Ombre's picture

this is making it harder and harder to hate on PSU...ive always liked franklin for the most part

Potential coordiantors for his staff are editing their resume's and assessing their wives looks!
Google it!

tennbuckeye19's picture

One thing I will miss about Franklin being in Nashville is how he would subtly and sometimes not so subtly diss the Tennessee program during interviews. It was great. Of course he'll probably bring that to the B1G and say things about OSU and I will want to kick him in the groin, but until then, we're good.

Wesleyburgess1's picture

Penn state will be better with JF then Bob...I would take James Franklin over Kevin Sumlin or Charlie Strong. Mike G. Is not decommiting now for sure.

armybuckinva's picture

Narduzzi now becomes a candidate for the Vanderbilt position.

OldColumbusTown's picture

I imagine Tom Herman would as well.

OldColumbusTown's picture

Franklin is a tremendous recruiter, and his most important recruiting pitch needs to come today, right away, to his incumbent QB.  If Hackenberg splits, that sets PSU back right off the bat.  Keeping Hackenberg is huge towards the immediate efforts of Franklin and putting a championship-caliber team on the field.  PSU isn't there yet with the sanctions they are still sorting through, but you better believe they still have quite a bit of talent in that program.  Having to start with another frosh could hamper the program development another 1-2 years.

gumtape's picture

This seems like a good hire. Where are the haters hating on the search committee now?

He also said that he won't hire an assistant coach who doesn't have an attractive wife. Not exactly in-line with traditional Penn State coaching philosophies, but in the same spirit.
But hey, at least one other program in the Big Ten bothers to go out and get a head coach who has been successful anywhere other than the MAC...

BassDropper's picture

Those who follow the B1G closely like myself, can see that the B1G is starting to turn the page on being a "bad" conference. For example
Michigan hiring Alabama's OC. Statistically, Bama's offense was at its best under Nuss.
Penn State hiring one of the hottest coaches on the market (no homo)
Teams like Indiana beginning to recruit well. They signed 5 four star prospect last year and has another this year. According to this years 4 star, there will be 2 more big time prospect joining him.
Michigan State becoming a solid number 2, possibly the new #1 in the B1G.  Regardless, there are now 2 legit national threats in the B1G.

Thanks lol. My intentions aren't to troll. For about a month prior to my little streak I've been on lately, I was getting multiple DVs on just about every post for no reason at all. I mean I got almost -40 and called a troll for stating that I am a One Direction fan. Then all of a sudden I decided if I was going to get DVs, it might as well be worthy of getting DVs. I'm gonna cut it out though because I even get annoyed with myself.
And nope, my avi is still One Direction

Good luck to Rutgers and Maryland trying to get the northeast kids now.

tennbuckeye19's picture

True. But it could also be tougher for OSU in that area as well.

CPDenn's picture

Oh it definitely will be tougher for us too, but man, this is a nightmare hire for Maryland and Rutgers.

tennbuckeye19's picture

For sure. And since Franklin was the OC at Maryland, he already knows the area and has recruited it before. Sorry Terps. Sorry Scarlet Knights.

Testudo Times had a really good rundown on why this is a nightmare for Maryland (and by extension, Rutgers). It was written before even Franklin was hired.

Apparently, this is not yet a done deal?  Just read that though PSU has offered the job to Franklin, and PSU officials have announced that he will be their next HC, Vandy officials say Franklin has told them the reports that he's accepted the job are not true.
Second thoughts, or just hammering out the details?
