Noah Spence Jadeveon Clowney Infographic

Note: Clowney sat out the game against Kentucky, so as stated in the graphic, he's played in one less game than Spence.

I would take Spence over Clowney any day. Clowney is soft and wants everything catered to him while Spence just gets shit done.

703Buckeye's picture

Clowney isn't just soft... he's LAZY. I see him take 3/4 of his plays off every game. Dude is just waiting to get paid.

Wait , he plays in the $EC. He's already getting paid.

I'd take both.

Ok this works for me - certianly a huge compliment for our 1st year starter, but also a sad commentary of Clowneys commitment to COLLEGE  football.

Braxton2Devin's picture

The total tackles for Jadaveon should be 27.

Rjpfish2's picture

I thought I noticed that too. The bar is the correct length though so it looks ok.

NorCal Buckeye's picture

The 19 for Clowney's solo tackles also looks off; it's the same length as the 14 for Spence.
Sorry, that's just the engineer in me....

Matt Pence's picture

Thanks guys. Should be correct now.

while I do agree that I would rather have Spence, mainly due to attitude and such as others have mentioned, I have two things:
1) especially after last year, Clowney is likely getting a lot more attention from the opposition's offensive lines, limiting his production at least a little bit.
2) Clowney has 30 pounds on Spence, which will be beneficial to him when it comes to pro scouting.  That being said, with Coach Mick around I'm sure Spence still has some muscle to add in his time at OSU

Wesleyburgess1's picture

Clowney is allot more physical but Spence is quicker. Spence puts fourth allot more effort too. I'd take Spence anyway of the week over Clowney. Seems like he's read to much of his espn article's and has quit on the fame.

there is no greater joy than watching Michigan get slammed. in anything

buckeyedude's picture

Isn't Clowney playing linebacker? At 6'6"? And Spence is playing DE @ 6'3" at almost 30 lbs lighter.
I like guys that keep their mouth shut and work their asses off when playing for the Buckeyes. No prima donnas, please. OSU has had plenty of those, and I'm sick of them. Let them play in the SEC.

Clowney rotates around the D-line.

...and Michigan still sucks.

buckeyedude's picture

Oh. I thought he was playing LB. But at that size, it wouldn't make sense.

alust2013's picture

I'll keep Spence. Clowney is a great athlete, but it seems like he shouldn't have bothered suiting up this year. He got his ESPN fame from a play with such poor blocking that I could have gotten a TFL. I'd take a great attitude and work ethic over monstrous talent and athleticism with a bad attitude any day. You get high quality production, consistency and less drama.

...and Michigan still sucks.

otrain2416's picture

I'm sorry no way in hell Spence only has only 2 QB hurries/ pressures

Ugly Hour Chazz Bear's picture

Take off the glasses.  Clowney gets double teamed WAY more than Spence.

I'm taking the overall #1 pick...

I like the bux.

Kindell's picture

He will not be the number 1 overall pick.  A QB will go number 1.

Brandon26841's picture

He won't be far behind.

The guy's having a disappointing season for sure, but the NFL Draft is all about potential and Clowney has a shit ton of it. Look at last year:
Dion Jordan 3rd overall - 5 sacks
Ezekiel Ansah 5th overall - 4 1/2 sacks
Barkevious Mingo 6th overall - 4 1/2 sacks
Aldon Smith 7th overall (2011) - 4 1/2 sacks

Clowney's lack of production will mean next to nothing to NFL scouts. His size and athleticism are ridiculous. The inconsistent motor is definitely concerning though.

Spence is my guy.  I was frustrated early in the season when guys were complaining about him "not living up to his hype".  Glad he has put that to rest, love watching him play.

kareemabduljacobb's picture

I think you need to compare Spence's season to Clowney's season last year where they were both Soph's... now Clowney gets the full attention of offenses whereas Spence is breaking out this year and will likely go through what Clowney has this season, next year.

FWIW Clowney's soph year stats: 54(40 solo) tackles, 13 sacks, 23.5 TFL, 3 FF in 13 games.

I'm drooling thinking about Spence, Bosa, Bennett, and co. against Lewan and co. This is going to be so awesome.

ScarletNGrey01's picture

6'6" 274 lbs wow didn't realize Clowney was that freakin' huge.  But yeah, Noah Spence is going to be something special.  Neat graphics / comparison chart.

Here's what I've learned almost 50 years into this deal. After playing organized football thru school and being an uber fan for essentially the entirety of my time on earth it finally dawned on me, probably around 40 (I'm a slow learner I suppose, but I digress), that I would take character and effort over freakish god given ability... every single time. I used to love the Alonso Spellman's and Jadeveon Clowney's of the football world. Guys who had/have things you cannot coach. Now? I'll take the guys who punch a clock and bust ass every day. These kinds of players/men, guys like John Simon, Chris Spielman, James Laurinaitis and Mike Vrabel, to name a few, didn't /don't have Clowney's (or Spellman's) ridiculous gifts. They do, however, have something better: relentless, unending, unwavering effort. They are also high character guys (from what we know of them publically at least). If Earl Bruce had said to Chris Spielman "We're playing DeVry this week on a gravel parking lot in Newark," Spielman would've said "I'll be there." So would John Simon... Clowney??? Hell, he barely wants to play when it's USC v Alabama on national TV in front of 80k fans.

I'm a big Noah Spence guy, I just hope on 11/30 he can replicate this!

Spence also didn't sit portions of games because his vag hurt. I think he should get extra recognition/ points for that, as I don't think he gets enough credit for what he does on the field.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

Hovenaut's picture

Nice comparison.

Clowney is the mega-star, sure. But, my homerism aside, I get the impression Spence has a higher quality of character.

SPreston2001's picture

Im not going to say I wouldnt like to have Clowney on our team because that would be a lie, but this graphic is a little off considering offenses gameplan around Clowney and try to avoid him as much as possible. The dude gets double teamed every play so that has to count for something. I love Spence but like others have said compare their sophomore years for a more accurate measurement.

cinserious's picture

Seems to me like Spence's appendage sticks out farther than Clowney's appendage.

Life's daily struggle is choosing between saying F--ck-it, or soldiering on with your responsibilities.

BUCKSOMIES's picture

I'll take Spence's solid effort and character over Clowney's god given talent every time.  At least we know Spence will give it his all every snap.  Clowney takes too many plays off even when he is not double teemed.
