Michigan Suspends Tight End A.J. Williams After Arrest

AJ Williams was pulled over at 2 AM Sunday Morning (which is generally not the best time to be pulled over) and eventually arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. Brady Hoke had no choice but to suspended their blocking tight end for the Michigan State game.

Williams is obviously innocent until proven guilty.

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

There it is?

I think the right thing to do is suspend him until the legal proceedings are finalized.  Once he takes care of his obligations under the law, then he can play football.  I know Coach Meyer takes that stance with players, and I agree with it.

God Bless Coach John Cooper!

And yet somehow, michigan fans are always taunting us about our troubles.

I would've sent a check but I already sealed up the envelope...

kholmes's picture

As a Michigan fan, I can strongly agree that these type of things happen at all schools a similar amount. These are young kids at all schools who will always screw up sometimes..so any Michigan fans that A) taunt other schools about their incidents or B) tries to argue that it happens at Michigan less are complete idiots.
That said, I would also argue that fans at every school laugh at other schools incidents and make these silly claims so picking out a bunch of fans comments at any school isnt representative of their fan base.

That door swings both ways. You have players stealing laptops, driving drunk and other offenses but yet call OSU a bunch of thugs. Not many schools rival TSUN in the amount of hypocrites.

kholmes's picture

I thought my post was in agreement with you for the most part as i was stating that it would be stupid for a michigan fan to argue this happens any less at michigan than other schools. The second part that you highlighted was just cautioning that it doesnt always make sense to generalize about any fanbase based on a handful of jokers on the internet...all of these fanbases are millions of people so you can always find a handful of clowns saying something stupid.

KLF Buckeye's picture

I would like to make the generalization that everyone affiliated with TSUN dances like this:

Dude just got suspended for one of the biggest games of the year against a bitter rival.  Not sure how/why you would find any criticism of Hoke's handling of the situation.

"Brady Hoke had no choice but to suspended their blocking tight end for the Michigan State game."
Is that criticism?

Oyster's picture

Lets start with driving under the influence and underage drinking (born in '94) all in another state.  Yea, that's worth a 1 game suspension.  Let's flip it to OSU and what would you say about 1 game?
Be honest with your answer.

God Bless Coach John Cooper!

Hello_Heisman's picture

Honestly it would depend on the game.  Example:  if OSU's next two games were against Akron and Alabama and the player in question was suspended for the Akron game only, I would call bullshit.  If the schedule was reversed, however, and the player in question was only suspended for a single game, but it was an obviously important one such as Alabama, I'd be far less critical.  You can send a message through suspensions not just by sheer length, but also by ensuring that the player misses a "big" game against a key rival.  Now, if AJ Williams gets suspended for another couple weeks beyond MSU, I'll fully support that as well.
But I know you've seen plenty of instances in the past where if a big game is coming up and bad news breaks on a player before he's found to be formally "guilty", some coaches will mess around and let the player keep taking the field until the justice system completes its review of the situation.  Obviously Meyer didn't do that earlier this year with Hyde and Roby, and Hoke isn't doing it now with Williams, regardless of the magnitude of this week's game.

Hey, what did Hyde and Roby get charged with again?

Actually Roby got charged with Battery which was later reduced to Disorderly Conduct.

sivaDavis's picture

All charges were dropped against Roby. So I ask again, what did Hyde and Roby get charged with?

OSU069's picture

Actually Roby ended up getting charged with nothing because all charges were dropped.

northcampus's picture

I don't care who the player in question is, nor who the team has coming up on the schedule.  If they do something dumb (this was something dumb), they need consequences.  Any kid playing football for OSU or UM (or any other 'name' program) has ample opportunity no matter where their party spot happens to be to find alternative transportation (and/or a place to crash).  Putting other's lives at risk leaves zero to debate (regardless of who it is/what team they play for).

sivaDavis's picture

I wouldn't want my players doing anything dumb as well, especially after hours. But a DUI is ALOT more serious then what was being held against Roby. Roby suspended a game with no charges against him, same for Hyde but suspended 3 games. This UM TE will get suspended for this game and that is it. Just like with Fitz Toussaint, will plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge, get fined and have to do either AA meetings or drug tests. Note that I tried to emphasize on charge seeing how that means he actually was charged with something. Hoke doesn't know how to control a team and never will. It was laughable that the other day I was reading MGoBlog and there were actually fans during the PSU UM game saying Hoke was a better coach than Meyer. He has ZERO conference titles. Meyer has two NATIONAL titles.

KLF Buckeye's picture

Suspension decisions should NEVER depend on the perceived quality of the competition. How can a respectable coach send the message that missing a game against a certain opponent is or is not adequate punishment based on how "big" that game would be? College coaches are professionals and one would hope they would not send this kind of signal to their players or players and coaches at other schools. A coach wants his players to feel every game is important.
Let me put it this way. If a coach suspends a player for two games because the next opponent is allegedly "weak" and the one after that "strong", the coach essentially sends the message that he respects one team more than the other. Professionals, even if their name is Hoke, should not send such messages.

bro storm klein and carlos were kicked off the team until further notice, then urban let them back in once he realized shit was blown out of proportion. luckily i don't believe anyone on tOSU has gotten a DUI yet under Urbz, how many is that for HOKEY??

Michigan sucks.  Therefore, all criticisms are valid.

Unky Buck's picture

Not quite sure where you're seeing any sort of criticism. Hoke did the right thing, and the only thing he could do at this point, and they even pointed out (as many tend to forget) that he's innocent until proven guilty...as in don't rush to judgment on the kid.

If you jiggle your monitor, does that make a jiggly gif?

Defensive much H_H?  I don't see where anyone criticized Hoke.  Did I miss something?

Jonnferrell's picture

I don't think they were criticizing Hoke at all.  He did the right thing.  Bad choice and timing for that young man.  We've all had enough of that careless crap.  Young men, unfortunately playing college football means that you need to keep yourself out of situations where you affect your team negatively.  Losing a blocking tight end is not good when you're going against the Spartan defense.

"I miss Brady Hoke."

skid21's picture

He seriously had no choice. We have seen his reaction when he did have a choice so there is a lot of room for criticism.

skid21's picture

Just one game? I remember our players getting suspended for multiple games for less. Yet scUM fans feel free to criticize Urban for his discipline of players. Hoke and his game suspensions for players with major offenses is laughable. This guy was arrested.

TheShookster's picture

We are just finding out now that this dude was under the influence? What else could explain his choosing to play for Michigan?

Oh no! Their blocking TE! They may now rush 27 times for 25 yards in lieu of a wopping 27yds.

There is no excuse for driving while intoxicated, i say an indefinite suspension until the matter is decided in court, then the coach should take appropriate action, if found guilty, then dismissal from the team.

Weren't the UC football players involved in a car wreck a few weeks ago also in Oxford visiting friends?  Miami has some great parties, but these kids need to be smart enough to spend the night somewhere up there after having their fun.

skid21's picture

Miami of Ohio hasn't won a game all year. There may be a lot of football fan drinking in their town. Misery loves company so it may be a draw for TSUN fans who see the inevitable.
