Illinois Routs Cincinnati, 45-17

Illinois pulled off a real stunner for Big Ten fans by not just beating Cincinnati, but routing them. A safe pick for arguably the worst team in the Big Ten, Illinois beat a projected 10-win team in Cincinnati.

Seriously, did anyone predict this? It at least helps the Big Ten's battered reputation.

Great win for the big ten!!!

Didn't see the game, but sounds like UC tanked when Legeaux went down.

Good win for the Illini.

Cincinnati actually tanked all game long. It only conceded defeat, down three scores, when Legeaux got injured. Astonishing turn of events, really. Bearcats were a double digit favorite, and expected to be a 10-win team that would be Louisville's argument for inclusion into the BCS title game. Illinois won two games and needed a goal line stand last week to beat a FCS team.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing.

Hats off to Beckman's bunch then, sure didn't expect that.

Cincinnati was assumed to be the toughest opponent on the Louisville schedule, right? So much for that.

I was at the game.  It was ugly for Cincinnati.  The Legeaux injury wasn't until midway through the 4th quarter.  The game was well in hand before he was injured.

Isn't that great statesman of integrity Tuberville now coaching Cincinnati?

Yes, Tuberville is coaching UC.  It will take another game to see if Illinois is real, or if UC is really not that good.

Maybe Purdue is that bad?? Just think, ND insists on keeping them on the schedule while dropping the #2B1G

and ignoring Gene Smith's call for a game. Or is Swarbrick a chicken to play TOSU?

faux_maestro's picture

So I guess we need to ask: just how bad is Purdue?

How bad they are is irrelevant.  They will play like a top-10 team against OSU just like they do every year.  Luckily the Buckeyes are a top-3 team this year.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

They didn't play like a top 10 team in 2010.

Naturally they will have some down years.  But not too many; it can't be that hard to prepare for a one game season.

I'm hoping for more 2010 performances by Ohio State.

Driving through Indiana this afternoon with nothing on the radio.... and their talking heads said Indiana State had the ball inside the Boilermaker's 35 in the last minute. Driving to win with TD. Last second INT sealed PU's victory.  My point, they must be horrible.

I've always felt Illinois was better than their record last year, especially with Scheelhase (sp?) at QB.

Beckman turning it around this year...definitely looks like he's off any perceived hot seat for the time being.

Tip my hat to Illinois. Not gonna lie marked this one down as a L for them at the beginning of the season. This gives them a lot of momentum heading into nest week when they host #20 Washington. Beating them would be a huge win for the BIG 10. Unfortunately their conference schedule is brutal and 6-6 would be a successful season for them

  • @ #22 Nebraska
  • #21 Wisonsin
  • Mich St.
  • @Penn State
  • @Indiana
  • #2 Ohio State
  • @ Purdue
  • #19 Northwestern

So let's spot them the win at Purdue - that's almost a given at this point. The home game against Sparty is interesting because Illinois' weak suit is its defense and MSU's is Walrusball, so they might have a chance to pull off the upset there.
That makes three wins. Let's pretend they take care of business against Washington next week and Miami (Ohio) the week after... That means they have to stop Kevin Wilson's prolific Indiana offense to get to bowl eligibility. I'd say 6-6 is a realistic goal, but beating any one of the ranked B1G powerhouses on their schedule is still a tall order.

I like Santa Ono, but he tweeted this after last week's Purdue game. This is definitely propogating UC's "little brother" mentality, and all of the UC fans I know have been taking shots at us all week.
So, hats off to the Illini. They were 0-8 in conference last year, and they shut up the Bearcat fans today.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

Good day overall for the B1G.  Except Indiana of course.  Come on you let the Naval Rapists beat you?

I remember during the dubcast before the Toledo game in 2011, their guest blogger called Tim Beckman 'the next big hire for whoever gets him'. Like, it was a forgone conclusion that he'd be hired away after the season. Kinda wonder if that's coming to fruition now.

The ONLY reason Illinois won is because Cinci's QB went down and the whole team, who counts wholly on this one player's performance, decided they couldn't match up with Illinois without Munchie. Oddly enough, they could smash Purdue but couldn't hang with Illinois. I don't mean to take credit from anyone's win but come on! If Munchie stays in, Cinci wins. I'm glad the B1G got a non-conference win like that but it was over CINCINNATI!!!! That's about the same as Ohio State's win, in the grand scheme of things, it is not that big of a deal. To anyone who debates that Cinci is a projected 10 win team: Who cares? They play in a crap conference with next to no true competition.

I don't like nice people. I like tough, honest people.
