Urban Meyer: Ohio State to Wear Alternate Uniforms Against "Rival"

September 5, 2013 at 12:48p    by Kyle Rowland

You'll see this helmet again in late November in Ann Arbor.

Some fans love them, some hate them. Alternate uniforms have become a point of contention in college football, especially at tradition-rich schools. Urban Meyer confirmed that Ohio State will take part in the alternate uniform craze once again for the Michigan game. Of course, though, Meyer refused to call them by the proper name. Instead, he simply said "rival" when referencing Michigan.

Sounds cool, but would almost rather see an alternate home uniform for the Wisconsin or Penn State game. Just hope Nike decides to sell them this year.

Chief B1G Dump's picture

Totally agree on the game. We keep changing for THE game. I'd prefer to keep our real uni's for THE game and wear the alternates for a boss night game...like PSU or Wisco this year...and at home. However, the kit we wore last year were probably the coolest alternates ive seen.

I dont care if they sell them or not...im not a jersey guy.

im excited to see the white versions of last years alternates, which i thought were awesome

Lobs it to the endzone... Touchdown Devin Smith!!

CUBS's picture

I think having a white version of those from the game OSU played against Michigan last year would be pretty cool looking.

M Man's picture

I always like pointing this out; OSU is like the Cowboys, or LSU.  Your team looks better, to my eye, in your road-whites than in home-Scarlet, and I think yours is the best road uniform in the Conference.
So what do you do with away-uniform jerseys?
Something like this?
(Or, perhaps white jerseys with black numerals?)

acBuckeye's picture

I agree M-Man. I think OSU and Texas have the coolest road jerseys in the nation.

Mirror Lake Jump's picture

I think the Texas burnt orange ones are one of the best in college football.

OSUbonobo23's picture

Texas all whites are disgusting.

I put the The, in The Ohio State Univeristy.

thorvath22's picture

Totally agree which is why we usually wear our whites to bowl games.

Also Texas' whites are awesome as well.

thatlillefty's picture

Never thought about the bowl uniforms, but you're right.
Here's the breakout over our last 10 bowl games:
'12 Gator Bowl vs. Florida White (loss)
'11 Sugar Bowl vs. Arkansas White (win)
'10 Rose Bowl vs. Oregon White (win)
'09 Fiesta Bowl vs. Texas White (loss)
'08 BCS NCG vs. LSU Scarlet (loss)
'07 BCS NCG vs. Florida White (loss)
'06 Fiesta Bowl vs. Notre Dame White (win)
'05 Alamo Bowl vs. Okie State Scarlet (win)
'04 Fiesta Bowl vs. Kansas State White (win)
'03 BCS NCG vs. Miami White (WIN)
Just two games in scarlet vs. 8 games in white... And I've learned nothing during this meeting.

doodah_man's picture

Hope the white version is better at showing the numbers. It was tough last year from C deck.

Last year's helmets helped me maintain the look of "Silver Bullets" in my eyes. I like to see Silver Bullet helmets, full of Buckeye leafs, line up across from those yellow winged helmets. The other Pro Combat versions totally took away that iconic, traditional look. I liked the Pro Combats, all of them really, but just not in The Game.

BKLYN_Buckeye's picture

Ugh...The helmets were the ugliest part of the uniform.

Earle's picture

Didn't mind the wide stripe, but hated the green stickers.

Italics are for emphasis; an ellipsis represents an unfinished thought.

Bolt's picture

I actually like the green stickers. It's a cool, sharp contrast and makes the Buckeye leaves themselves jump out as more than just being stickers.

Kurt's picture

The stickers are always green, they're generally too small to make them out as green though.  The helmets from last year's game were referencing the large Buckeye stickers of the 60s and 70s.  Look back at any image of Archie from the 70s and you'll see.

Earle's picture

Agreed, Kurt, but it was the shade of green that bothered me.  The stickers have traditionally been dark enough to appear almost black except up close.  Last year's green was garish and I thought detracted from what was otherwise a pretty sharp alternate uniform.

Italics are for emphasis; an ellipsis represents an unfinished thought.

Kurt's picture

Oh right, that's true and I have to agree.

kmp10's picture

See the thick black pant stripe and the very thin white stripe the '70s teams (72-78) wore in this Archie Griffin photo? THAT'S what I wanna see again, but they went the opposite direction this year... again.

741's picture

...and we should all wear bell bottom pants and have mutton chop sideburns. Enormous afros are optional.

M Man's picture

Agree.
I liked the wide stripe, a lot.
But I'm not registered to vote on Ohio helmets in Ohio.

buckeyedude's picture

Notice the nice gray stripes on Archie's sleeves. And the wide pant stripes. This was a very nice uni.

BuckeyeinExile's picture

Put a big picture of Woody's head from 1968 on front and #45 on the back and call it a day. If that doesn't scare the heck out of them I don't know what will.

House804's picture

The helmets with the thick black stripe are just god awful.  Hated the jerseys against scUM last year, loved the outcome.

We talkin' bout practice?!  Not the game I love...the game I die for.  Practice?!

RedStorm45's picture

I was hoping we were going away from the combat/throwbacks in the last game of the year.  I didn't mind them against Wisco in '11.  But that last game is all about tradition and we don't need to be messing with the unis for it.  Acutally, I wouldn't mind seeing both teams wear their home unis (a la USC/UCLA).  That would be cool.

BuckeyeMark's picture

Love this idea.  White away jerseys were created for black and white TV so fans at home could follow the action.  Aside from a few folks in Alabama (who cannot get Big Ten football on their rabbit ear/coat hanger/tin foil antennas) no one watches on a black and white TV any more.  So suit'em up in color!  Awesome!

NoVA Buckeye's picture

One special thing about the USC-UCLA game is that neither team wears white. It's one of the coolest traditions in CFB and I don't think we should copy USC in anything ever.

The offseason begins when your season ends. Even then there are no days off.

BuckeyeMark's picture

Hate every bit of this.  We have the best uni/helmet in all of football.  And then we mess with it - because our Nike Overlords say so - for the most important game of the year.  Just hate it.

And can we get the grey stripes back on our sleeves?  I know, I know ... stop ranting...

Doc's picture

I'm not disagreeing, but I would rather have Nike as our overlords than addidas.  Their uniform division is run by a bunch of ass clowns.  Just look at ANY uniform AACC, Wisky, or Nebraska puts on.  Addidas doesn't change the design for the different schools, just the colors.

razrback16's picture

I liked those helmets last year.

wojodta's picture

I don't have a problem with wearing the alternate unis for a game each year. I'm just tired of it being against scUM nearly every single year. Why can't it be against Cal instead? I just feel like for this rivalry the standard uniforms need to be worn. It'd be like watching the Super Bowl and both teams decide to wear throwbacks. It doesn't make sense. Why mess with unis for the biggest game of the season?

I didn't mind the helmet last year, but agree with it NOT being agains scUM every year.

Bolt's picture

Agreed, I'd rather see them under the lights mid season on a nationally televised night game. Also, I thought that there was a big uproar still about both teams not being allowed to wear home darks. I think USC and UCLA did it a couple years ago and there was some big issue with it. I think some debates came popping up about letting rivals both wear their home colors in rivalry games, as there's rules specifically against doing so.

Mizzillion's picture

Miami and Florida Atlantic both wore home colors this past week.

OldColumbusTown's picture

I could be wrong, but I think I heard the away team which wears a dark (as opposed to the white they are supposed to wear) actually loses a timeout.  I don't remember if it is one timeout each half, or just one timeout to begin the game.  Either way, I remember talk about it because either USC or UCLA, whichever is home, usually uses up a timeout right out of the gate during the game in order to keep things fair between the two teams.

Jonnferrell's picture

I've never heard that one, but it's interesting.  Anyone got the rulebook on this?

"I'm still hungry." --Brady Hoke

Timmy_'s picture

Pretty sure it's just one timeout to start the game as I remember in the USC-UCLA game, the home team usually takes an immediate timeout to even them up.

buckifishr's picture

I hope this is just a "fashion" jersey and not something to be worn in a game.  Black is not one of our school colors and wearing black for the sake of wearing black is way overdone in sports.
I guess I am just old-fashioned, but I want to see the Buckeyes in their traditional* uniforms when I shell out my hard earned money to attend a game.
*as traditional as they can be when they seem to subtly change every couple of years.

Squirrel Master's picture

actually, black is a school color. Its not the prominent colors but it is listed as a school color.
I think Woody actually wore a black buckeye hat in the past, so its not like Black is completely unknown!
The jersey above is awful if you ask me but I would like an all black uni with complete red lettering, not that outlined black letter. It should be a complete contrast with the base black and the scarlett and grey standing out. As I said in another post, all blacks with red numbers, flat black helmet with a gloss stripe and a big scarlett block O on the sides.
something similar to this, but a glossy black stripe down the middle

I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!

buckifishr's picture

I stand corrected.
I knew black was used as an accent but did not realize it was actually listed as a school color.

I hope we don't start using any of the secondary palette colors anytime soon.

Officials prevented South Carolina from wearing a similar uniform in 2011. Don't think it's a good investment

Damn! I didn't realize The Swoosh was making black jerseys for sale this year. Doubt they will be worn by the team though. Pretty slick though. Could use a little more scarlet/red.

Looks like Texas Tech, no thank you. We are Ohio State we don't need to f&#% around with our uniforms every other week.

GrayDay's picture

Agreed.  I appreciate its popular with many, but for whatever its worth others of us hate the stupid one-game uniforms.  Rarely do these corporate money plays yield better looks than the teams' actual uniforms - usually they are much worse - and I think that has been true with OSU's experience.  Maybe that's fine for schools that have no football tradition worth preserving, but its annoying when it doesn't even look like its our team playing.  If you have a great uniform, wear it all season.  Want to update it over the years?  Fine, but if you've got something great already then make small improvements.  In our case know that we already have the best helmet tradition in all of sports.  You mess with good traditions enough and they're gone forever.

Otown Buckeye's picture

The most appropriate "throwback" style for this year would be to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the 68 title team.  Helmets would translate fine here.

Gametime's picture

Just thought I'd post this again before all the traditionalists get outta hand with the uniform hating. The uniforms have changed on average about every decade or so, and we're about due for some new duds...nobody is saying it should be Oregon-esq, and for so many people harping on tradition, you DO realize that OSU has done the Nike Pro-Combat Unis to HONOR PAST TEAMS with modern takes on classic uniforms?
I'd also like to take a moment to point out that at one point there was no gray in the jerseys, and the helmets & pants have been scarlet.
As long as it's nothing too radical done with the uniforms then there shouldn't be so much faux outrage. Last year I'd say they probably got it 95-98% right (black names & silver numbers were no good for fans watching; look great on the jerseys just wearing them though).

ChicagoBuckeye33's picture

I myself am partial to the 1890 jerseys, when we apparently dressed like a marching band for our football games.  Is that a little hat I see under the jersey!?  Damn, those are so ridiculous haha!  I love them.

cal3713's picture

It's not faux outrage.  They call it a uniform for a reason, and all these alternate color combinations start to bend the definition.  If cops or firefighters wore alternate unis every weekend (while doing the same exact job), the clothes wouldn't as effectively signal that person's role in society.
I don't like alternates for that reason... sure, logically, rationally, it's the same team and the same people, but still, they mess with my brain.

AirForceNUT's picture

Comparing a football teams colors' to a police department or fire fighters is just plain silly.

What I want to know is why if we're doing all of this experimentation with unis(I seriously loved last year's helmets and unis vs. TTUN), why can't they give facemaskless leather helmets another shot?
Since players are no longer allowed to make helmet to helmet hits, go with leather, or better yet, no helmet at all, rugby style.

The uniforms haven't changed much since 1980, when I was born. So to me, having grown up watching the Bucks play every week in their wonderful, iconic uniforms, I got used to seeing them a certain way. These crazy adaptations (while kinda cool and neat) are starting to wear on me, and are completely unnecessary for a tradition-loaded program like OSU. We don't need to do it. If you wanna do a one-off for a big night game, fine. But PLEASE quit doing it for a noon kickoff against those weasels up north.

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

Bucksfan's picture

Last year's rivalry uniforms were awesome.  The helmet was sick.  Even the die-hard, no-change people I know ultimately admitted that they were pretty cool.
It's the 21st century.  Ohio State's uniforms used to change every few years, and then suddenly the helmet stopped changing in 1968.  Tradition has its place and all, but it's the 21st Century.  We talk to our cars like it's the g'damn Enterprise computer, we read literature on a tablet, we go to class from our apartments off campus (or from another city!), and our TVs are so crystal clear that we don't even know if something is real or not when we see it.
I don't think it's that absurd for Ohio State's football unis to get an updated look.  Time we stop living in the early 1970s...that's 30 years before today's college students were even born.

741's picture

I thought this helmet was a little Christmas tree ornamenty, but still cool.
I like the new "tradition" of wearing an cutting edge alternate uni every year for one rivalry game. If the players dig it, I think we should learn to love it.

CC's picture

I'm 100% in on a chrome helmet, but the stripe is awful. It screwed up the ratio of helmet to leaves. I think a mirror chrome helmet with all the existing stickers, mask etc would be a 10.

buckeyedude's picture

I absolutely love these helmets from last year's TTUN game and wish they would be permanent. That's how much I love them.
I love the WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE stripe and black face mask.
update: also, i think using alternate unis for the TTUN game kind of f$%ks with their heads. They're not sure what to expect.

I liked last year's alternates actually. The black names were kinda pointless, but the rest of it I really liked. I haven't been impressed with any of the others, but I'm interested to see what the alternates will look like this year.

...and Michigan still sucks.

I was totally thinking the same thing..... A gray uni with some red numbers outlined in white!! that would be the ticket! I will always prefer the original uni's but for fashion purposes I'm cool with trying new things!! I don't mind the script #22, but I HATE, HATE HATE THE PLAIN JANE HELMETS! Put a couple of black stripes down the middle or something.
Next to Michelin's so-called "winged" helmets, they look boring. They need more pizzazz. They almost look like practice helmets or something. Or that maybe the athletic department ran out of money, and they couldn't afford stripes or helmet stickers.
Did I mention I liked last year's helmets vs. TTUN the best?

i fully acknowledge that i am a uniform geek and need professional help.....but, did anybody else catch that the team is wearing different pants this season?
last year, the black stripes were the same thickness as the red.  Last week, the black stripe was very thin (like how it was in the 90's).
the team makes minor changes like this every couple of years and most people don't notice.  I think besides the stars on the back, the last change was the moving of the TV (shoulder) numbers from corner of the shoulder (directly above the stripes) to the top of the shoulder.  this happened the year after the "new" jersey design.

Earle's picture

Yes, the pants stripes now match the helmet stripes.  I believe the pants are a slightly darker shade of gray as well.

I do agree about the white jerseys. During the day I'm like blah, but at night under the lights the white jerseys with the beaming helmets is the best look in CFB.

Thought I'd throw this out here. In 2011, South Carolina was prepared to wear these jerseys, but were told by the officiating crew they had to change into their normal jerseys because the numbers were too difficult to read. Don't expect the Bucks to wear the all-black jersey to float around. For comparison sake, here's the illegal uniform South Carolina attempted to wear:

I do agree that alternate unis once a year are cool.  I like to see what they come up with.  Although I also agree that it should be alternated against more team than just TTUN.  I'm liking the black uni.  Reminds me of something Darth Vader would wear if he had played back in his day.  ;-)
