Report: Manziel Suspended for the First Half against Rice

By Anonymous (not verified) on August 28, 2013 at 3:30p

Texas A&M will suspend Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel for the first half of its season opener against Rice on Saturday, according to a report from Billy Liucci of Further, Brett McMurphy of ESPN is reporting the suspension "closes the book" in the eyes of the NCAA.

Why is he being suspended if the NCAA acknowledges he did not accept money? Glad you asked:

Take it away, Jake Stoneburner.

Wow.... If they are suspending him for the rule he broke it better be at least an 8 game ban....

The question is: How many autographs can he sign during the 1st half of the game?

Knowing Johnny, I'm sure he'll find some kid on the sidelines and sign something for him, but not before he finds the camera.

There should be at least 20-30 more chances for the NCAA to suspend him for something before the year is out.

No reasoning can explain this.  The NCAA will say he didn't take money, but we all know it comes down to two white kids being smarter than the NCAA.  He took money, we all know he did, just NCAA couldn't prove it.  They don't want to lose their money maker anyway and we all know ESPN probably persuaded them to make sure he was playing Sept. 14 against Bama.  PATHETIC NCAA

"The bylaw cited by @billyliucci,, indicates he's being punished simply for permitting the use of his name for commercial purpose."
By this accord, every single NCAA athlete whose likeness or name is ever used for any profitable enterprise should be suspended.
Hypocrisy in its purest form and at its highest levels.  It's time for a change.  Revolutionize college athletics...and while we're at it, reform the entire higher education landscape.  It's become nothing more than a money grab (mostly for "non-profit" institutions).  Would love to see OSU lead the way in bringing healthy, sustainable reform!

brylee's picture

what a bullshit rule.  that bylaw would apply to all players, since the ncaa and the membership institutions are profiting from each of these kids.

Idaho Helga's picture

"permitting the use"?  So athletes are required to file charges and pursue anyone who has sold an autographed whatever for profit?  Isn't that what is in between the lines here?  Once you hand over an autographed item, you have absolutely no control over whether it's sold commercially or just hung on a wall.

Armybuck925's picture

South Carolina and Clemson definitely know this bylaw. They sent a little mom and pop restaurant a cease and desist order for using the names of Clowney and Tajh Boyd for the names of his sandwiches. Cited this bylaw in the order to prevent them from being suspended. In the NCAA eyes, even if you don't know about it and do nothing because of not knowing about it, then you face a potential suspension...Wait...What?!?

razrback16's picture

The NCAA needs to be told by the rest of the schools who don't get the "SEC / Oregon discount" on punishments throughout the country to take a hike. We need a new governing body that has some consistency to it. The NCAA is completely lost.

Scam Newton .. receives directly or indirectly hundreds of thousands of dollars (along with a few laptops from FLA) and the punishment ...wait for it .. no reprimand from the NCAA
Johnny Funnyball .. receives $7500 for signing memorabilia ... and the punishment ..wait for it ... a half a game against national powerhouse RICE.
The tat 5 .. received free tats in exchange for their own belongings and for Posey an extra $3.07 in his summer pay (from a job he actually worked at) and the the punishment .. 5 games plus 5 more for Posey.
All I can conclude from this is that our boys should have asked for way more than just tats and there would have been no problem with the NCAA.

I want to know the full extent of the NCAA investigation.  They routinely botch investigations dragging them out over several years.   Now, they secure Manziel's ability to play by fast-tracking this investigation which I suspect directly corresponds to a failure to gather evidence against him.

How does the NCAA wrap up the Manziel investigation in...2 weeks?
OSU took a year.  Oregon and Miami took multiple years.  IIRC, USC took a long time as well.  But the Manziel and Newton investigations are sped along faster than most airport TSA screenings.

theDuke's picture

this is what i'm curious about.  are you kidding me? It took 9+ months for them to investigate tOSU and more then 2 years now for the U, but they got through college station in about, oh, we'll call it 2 hours...

d5k's picture

Because OSU and Miami provided more evidence upon request.  A&M has nothing to provide and they have nothing to go on but "we all know he did it".  So they have to stick it in their pipe and smoke it.
I don't like Manziel at all but I think the NCAA got what they had coming to them in this case.  He basically depantsed them in front of the whole country.

theDuke's picture

haha!  so true. just figured they would have the power to declare him ineligible for non-cooperation in an investigation.  kind of like they hit Reggie Bush (albeit after the fact) and USC.  They didn't cooperate and got smacked... but we are talking about the NCAA, so who knows? I guarantee they don't.

d5k's picture

This is akin to never talking to the police without a lawyer present.  Look at the Dez Bryant case.  He didn't do anything except denying that he did something legal out of instinct when cornered by the corrupt NCAA investigators.  And it isn't really SEC as much as the specific schools that aren't forthcoming if you look at the AJ Green case in particular.  1 signed Jersey = 4 games in that case.
While Manziel is a tool, let's please direct the anger where it is deserved, at the NCAA and their rulebook.  I have no problem with him selling his likeness, and would've had a problem if he had his career derailed over a few signatures even if he is a douchebag.  Sure the NCAA's enforcement is a joke and the rules are even worse, but I'm not going to hate him for lawyering up and being rational about his defense.  OSU should not have forced TP et al to confess unless they had the opportunity to talk to a lawyer and decide whether cooperating was in their best interest.  Burden of proof is on the dirtbags at the NCAA imo.  Sometimes it takes a rich spoiled jerk with less to lose to stand up to corruption and fight fire with fire.

So Stan Verrett (known LSU Superfan) was on SC this morning (it's morning where I'm at) doing a college football rundown, gets to OSU and has to mention, "They only play three ranked teams, none of which in the top 15."  How about the fact that Bama only plays two.  I know they write their own scripts for the most part on SC, so I assume it's just his own personal bias, and I'm not one of those tin foil hat ESPN haters, but it pissed me off.

I would have liked to hear how the NCAA came up with the ½ game suspension. I bet it went something like this:
NCAA #1, why don’t we suspend him for 6 games?
NCAA #2, what are you crazy he has to play against Bama!
NCAA #1, A 1 game suspension will be a win-win for everyone.
NCAA #2, If we do that, they will lose to Rice, and we wont make as much money on the A&M/Bama game!
NCAA #1, You’re right we need to make as much money as we can, what was I thinking.
