Bradley Roby & Rod Smith Suspended for Opener

Urban Meyer's precedent set with Carlos Hyde's suspension (no charges filed; still suspended for poor decision-making) is being consistently applied.

Message: Sent. STOP PUTTING YOURSELVES IN BAD SITUATIONS.

Also:

Hopefully Bids bats 50% on this one. Roby is one of the team's strongest leaders on a squad that lost way too many of them to graduation.

Man, Rod Smith keeps fumbling his chances his away.  Was really hoping he could get it all together this year.

I see what you did there.

His fumble happened before he ever had an "opportunity" with Hyde's suspension

I actually don't think being voted a captain matters much for leadership purposes.  In college my junior year I was not a captain, but it took about halfway through the year for the underclassmen to realize that because I put myself out there as a leader.  Obviously it is nice to have that title, but for leadership it isn't a necessity.
Also I guess this could be a big reason why Meyer was saying that Eze would play in game 1.  We'll be down our top 2 RBs.

So..... does this kinda wrap up the dramatic portion of a weird off season?

Actual football, please hurry.

I'd love to see Dunn get the lion's share of the carries. Dunn and Ball not getting a lot of exposure is the unfortunate side effect of having such a deep stable, and I'd love to get a chance to see what they can do against a good LB corps, rather than just throw the freshman out there.

So stay inside a bubble?

Exactly...life happens.

I wasn't born a Buckeye but I became one as fast as I could.

buck-I.8's picture

Yes and no. Are some situations unavoidable? Yeah. Was Hyde's? No. Was Roby's? Doesn't seem like it. Was Murrays? Absolutely not. Was Baugh's? No. We don't know about Smith, but it seems like the majority of these cases are not just "life happening".

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

I don't really feel like going into Hyde's situation again, but what he did didn't warrant a 3 game suspension.

I agree, but it's a sad product of Meyer's national image that he has to overcompensate some to show that he's a good disciplinarian. It's harsh, possibly gratuitous punishment that will become a deterrant and help guys remember to walk away from any situation that has the potential to become volatile.

I may have missed it, but did anyone ever find out what Murray did?

I just have a feeling that Dunn will get his time to shine in this game..and the coaches may never look back. I don't remember him not looking good when he's in the game, just soo much talent!

BUCKEYES BABY!

Well, regarding Smith, this sort of solves a mystery that was alluded to on the thread below involving comments Bobby Carpenter made on air a couple of weeks ago. At the time it seemed rather off-hand but with no explanation; several wondered if Carpenter was actually talking about someone else.  Apparently this has been floating around within the program for awhile and is now being officially addressed.

Let's have a clean and uneventful last two weeks fellas.

The injury bug needn't come around any longer either.

Bummer about Rod Smith being suspended.  I figured Roby would be out at least 1 game - could see that ending up 2 or 3 depending on the outcome of the hearing.
I still feel pretty good about what we have in the backfield with Dunn, Elliot, Ball, Wilson and Hall.  Ball and Dunn are both still two pretty good sized backs being up over 210 pounds.  Also, a still a lot of speed as well.  I'm going to this game so it will be a great chance to see the younger backs up close.

RedStorm45's picture

Charges could potentially be dropped against Roby in the coming week or so as it appears he was more of a victim, but one game already handed down.  Tough.

buckeyepastor's picture

Looking at the positive, some young pup(s) will likely get a chance to bite early.   There is no one on the roster that is near as good a corner as Roby, but this is a chance to glimpse very quickly who will likely fill his shoes in 2014.

A partial victim maybe... in my experience you have to do something wrong to get roughed up by bouncers.  He got into a fight in the bar before this shit with the bouncer went down, and that deserves some football punishment even if it isn't a legal problem.

Any word on what Rod Smith's suspension was for?

45OH4IO's picture

He got caught carrying two illegal guns...

and by that I mean his biceps. Boo yah!

seriously, no one said yet.

Having watched Dunn in high school I root for the kid alot.So I really hope he takes the ball and Excells.

Seize the opportunity guys...  Who knows, this may lead to something special!

OurHonorDefend09's picture

I really like what I've seen from Warren Ball as well in his minimal live snaps. Hope to see him get some carries because I think he will also end up being a stud RB if he gets the opportunity.

Don't give up... Don't ever give up.

Strange why Meyer would go on a suspending spree, even with Smith. Something he did in February is being punished now? Sheesh. Actually no, this isn't strange. It's expected because the media goes ape whenever something happens to Urban's players. We can thank the idiots who blow stuff way out of proportion for this stuff. Now I'm not saying Roby and Hyde should be let off the hook, but it sounds like Meyer is just suspending anybody who gets any media attention for something off the field.
Heck, Urban even said himself that the media does bother him with all this talk about him and his players getting into trouble.

Kaceybrown's picture

I think Meyer is suspending players that break the rules, regardless of the media. We are just now finding out about smith, I certainly don't remember any media coverage. I appreciate Urban holding these players accountable, and I couldn't care less about what any bs double standard talking heads have to say about it. The message Urban is giving: If you break the rules, there are consequences. Don't put yourself in bad situations.

buckeyepastor's picture

It's unfair, but what can he do?   We are in a climate where no matter how much a coach enforces and stresses rules of discipline and integrity on and off the field, when those rules get broken it falls back to the coach's character (unless you coach at Texas A & M, or the current coach at Florida for whom everything negative that happened in 2012 and 2013 was the fault of the guy who stopped coaching there in 2010).

"Woody would have wanted it that way"

Kaceybrown's picture

The only thing I can really say is my perspective. I care about Ohio State; espn, fox sports, and the rest of them might as well talk to the couch cushion in regards to myself. I don't like the gators or any other sec schools so their fans and any input they want to litter the world with is simply going unheard in my mind.

buckeyepastor's picture

Roby suspension will likely just be a game.  Can't imagine more than that with disorderly conduct as the charge.   I appreciate that Urban is being stern, but anything larger than a 1 game suspension would likely mean these young men are being punished for what Meyer DIDN'T do about Aaron Hernandez (because hard as you try to say that the media attention around his arrest and the light it shone on Florida doesn't matter, it does).
As for Rod Smith, any word on what that pertains to.  I remember a brief news blip in March about a woman who claimed an unnamed player had forced her to perform oral sex.   I know we've had some dismissals from the team since then so it may have been one of those guys.
Any word for a Buckeye in exile in Nebraska about what happened with the above-mentioned accusation?

"Woody would have wanted it that way"

Kaceybrown's picture

I'm sure that whoever was named in that case is gone, no way Urban would allow him to be part of the team unlike somebody in baton rouge

According to the Dispatch this is Smith's last chance.

blah. just a very touchy subject made even touchier by stupid media. Unnecessarily touchier, i might add.

You can feed a bobcat all the chili it wants. That don't mean it's going to crap out diamonds.

That's a lot of touches. Like as many touches as rb's in the stable. Hopefully they all get many touches. Just thinking about it I touched my self.

Dude, this offseason has totally sucked outside of the wins on the recruiting front.  One game sounds about right for Roby.  I don't know about Smith because I'm really not sure what he did.

To any football players that frequent this site: Does anyone want to play for this football team?  I'm just wondering, because a lot of us would probably do it if we could run fast or had any appreciable talent.  Sadly enough, we may actually have to subject everyone to that, since at this rate there won't be an Ohio State Buckeyes by the first kickoff.
Get it together.

I can see why Urbz is worried about leadership on this team. Bad leadership is bad chemistry and bad chemistry does not an undefeated season make.
