D'Angelo Russell is a Buckeye!

D'Angelo Russell makes it four for the Buckeyes

Ohio State and Thad Matta received some good news today when 2014 guard D'Angelo Russell committed to the Buckeyes. Corey Albertson of Rivals.com first broke the news on twitter:

Russell will join a class that already has three other prospects committed in forwards Keita Bates-Diop and Jae'Sean Tate and also big man David Bell. Thad Matta will look to take at least one more prospect, preferably a center. Jahlil Okafor of Chicago and Elbert Robinson of Texas appear to be the two main targets at this point. PG Tyus Jones insists on being a package deal with Okafor and would be a player that you can't say no to. Russell has stated he plans to recruit the nations top overall prospect, Jahlil Okafor, to come join him in Columbus.

D'Angelo Russell also went to Twitter to announce his intention to commit to Ohio State (and also post a pretty cool picture):

This news comes days after we reported that D'Angelo Russell was on campus for a visit. This early commitment comes as a surprise, but many expected him to eventually pick the Buckeyes over the hometown Louisville Cardinals. In an interview with Adam Zagoria, the guard told him that Michigan State was actually his second choice.

The highly rated guard is known for his excellent shooting stroke and his play making ability. The 6'4 guard has the potential to play point guard, but he seems to be more of a natural fit at the shooting guard position. Here is some video of Ohio State's newest basketball commitment:

No gray box?

And YES! HUGE pickup!

Jordan Wagner's picture

I'm new here and I'm not exactly sure what that means. I'm just returning from the hospital but I wanted to get a story out there and I know our main basketball recruiting guy, Mike Young, will have more for everyone later or tomorrow.

Alright thanks for the info though!

A gray box is a story that pops up on the front page like an article, but it's major news. Like a commitment. It can be good or bad, but most of the time it's good ;-) It's called a gray box because the news is written in a gray box lol

AcrossTheField11's picture

For context, the first gray box appeared from Jason when tatgate originally broke in late December 2010. For a while it was typically bad news, but recently has been used for things like coaching hires, new commitments etc. As buckeeyfan52 said, pretty much any big time breaking news warrants a gray box. This qualifies which is a good thing. Welcome aboard!

Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.

Don't know what a gray box means....

Wow, he is smooth.  Effortless j and good handles.  Good at dishing too!

Gray box def deserved for this IMO. But good news is still good news gray box or no gray box.  This class as freshman along with the 2011 class as seniors should make for a very special season.
Go Thad and Go Bucks!!!

I'm not sure any of the 2014 commits got grey boxes, only Buckshots

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

Fantastic!  A Friday night surprise.  Thad Matta & Co. are gettin' it done once again.

but he seems to be more of a natural fit at the shooting guard position.

Unless I have skill blindness (look it up it's a real condition, like never nude), he very much looks like a potential all B1G point guard to me.

I thought same thing with the way he distributes the ball in that video.  But maybe his shot is as good or better than his passing. It's hard to say definitely based on just one highlight video.  Rivals definitely lists him as a SG.

Awesome! I like how he looks to pass even when he's got an open opportunity to take it to the basket. And I LOVE his drive to try and bring in Okafor and/or other top prospects.

Yeah! This is fantastic news! Thanks for the update Jordan!

Yeah!  Looks great!  I love that he is left handed too!

I admittedly don't follow recruiting much, but I would think that signing a 5 star would warrant a grey box and the usual 100+ comments.  Is this not as big a deal as it seems or was it just assumed that he'd be a Buckeye?  Whatever the case, welcome.  This strikes me as a major signing.

Jhesse17's picture

It's because it's a new writer who got the story and he didn't know what a gray box was.

I don't follow basketball recruiting much. So this was definitely a nice surprise for me! Welcome to the family D'Angelo.
